This general trend in poultry marketing is discussed by Dr. Carl Frischknecht, professor of poultry hubandry, in the current issue of "Farm and Home Science at Utah State Agricultural college. Good Demand Prior to World War II, most of the eggs produced in the western states were shipped east to the Atlantic coast states where they W'ere sold at a premium in comeggs petition with white-shelle- d from other parts of the world, Dr. Frischknecht informed. But with the advent of war, enormous quantities of our eggs and other products were needed by our armed forces in the Pacific and by the great civilian population in war plants in the west. Even though hostilities in this war zone have ended, poultrymen in the west are able to supply of the eggs only about now being utilized by these Pacific coast markets, the poultry expert said. There is an increase of 12 percent in the chicken and 26 percent in the human population in the mountain and Pacific coast states, It is doubtful if the western prod ducers will ever return to a program of marketing shell eggs in the east, Dr. Frischknecht believes. This is no longer a profitable centure for the mountain and Pacific coast shippers compared with the rich overnight markets in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The equivalent of 2.665 cars of eggs were received at these two markets in 19.76, compared with 4 616 cars in 1946. Increased Production Statistics indicate an increase of 435 percent in broiler production and an increase of 27 percent in Hie number of mature birds sold from 1936 to 1945 jn the mountain and Pacific coast regions. There is an increase of 95 in the turkey industry over the same period. Practically all surplus poultry products are now being shipped by truck instead of by rail to markets on the Pacific coast instead of to markets on the Atlantic coast, the article states. This is a real advantage when it comes to marketing perishable food products, as it serprovides practically over-nigvice to Los Angeles from points in Utah and Idaho. Industrial expansion, marked increases in population, improved transportation facilities, and greater consumption of poultry products per capita are largely responsible for the changes in marketing of poullry products , ready occurred Add t,' u'e a in marketing must t.
