Cohan, the Yankee Doodle- Dandy who wrote the best war song since Dixie, died today in the midst of a new world war for which Over There might mean any part of the globe. He died .at 5 a. m. in his Fifth Avenue apartment, surrounded by his wife, his son, George, Jr., and his daughters, Mary and Helen. Cohan, 64, succumbed to an intestinal ailment which forced him to undergo an operation a year ago (Oct. 19, 1941) and from which he never fully recovered. The song and dance man his own choice as the most fitting summation of his 54 years in the theater still was enfeebled from the long, eventually fatal Illness when Japan struck at Pearl Harbor. He wrote another war song. The tune was sprightly, with the old Cohan lilt, and the words rang true, but it was not the perfect wedding of lyrics and music which made Over There the marching song of a million Yanks. On the eve of publication it was decided to let the aong rest on the shelf. The decision fulfilled his own intuition, expressed two years ago, when he said: I hope America will never need another war song. But if we do need one, it will have to be written by some young fellow." It is very necessary for everyone living in forest regions to protect against fire because we depend on forests and grazing lands for water, power, meat and lumber," stated Professor Floyd. For effective fire control there must be good organization, trained crews of available men and an active desire on the part of the public to cooperate in preservation of forest resources. He pointed out that Utah now has a forestry and fire control board whose job it is to obtain and wisely locate equipment, recruit men, construct fire breaks and station fire guards. It is also this boards function to see that the pubHc, as well as the fire fighters, is educated in methods of preventing fire and in fighting the conflagrations if necessary. We are just beginning to give them the sort of warfare they gave to the civilians of France, Holland and Belgium on the highways two years ago, he said. No Quarter The commentator said that the axis troops were attempting to retreat back along the coastal road like so many rabbits smoked out of their holes. They are being pounded mercilessly, he said. We wouldnt do that sort of thing to civilians but we will to them. This is the first time since the war has started that we are really handing it back to German troops in retreat. The source said the 8th army was not interested merely ln occupying such points as Tobruk and Benghazi. We are interested, be said, in killing Germans where we find them and well take care of the Italian lackeys as we go along. .We are interested ln utterly smashing the army of men about whom Hitler boasted when he jeered at the British generals." The source said frankly that the battle of Egypt might prove to be "the prelude to something bigger" an obvious reference to the broadened allied offensive, presumably in north Africa, concerning which there has been much speculation. BY HENRY GORRELL WITH ALLIED AIR STRIKING FORCE IN WESTERN DESERT. Nov. 5 (lR American pilots and planes took a leading part in the allies' desert victory and today were in relentless pursuit of the fleeing enemy. Day And Night American fighter and bomber squadrons, with hundreds of other allied planes, were taking off almost every minute, day and night. In the last few minutes, as this dispatch is written, two squadrons have taken off. The roar of so many motors shakes the ground. It is the kind of work at which the Americans excel, pounding the enemy transport rushing westward in long, snakelike columns. The Americans are wonderful at form- ation flying and consider ground strafing their meat Gen. A. C. Strickland who was in the leading bomber of a United States army air force formation just returned, describing the chaos along the coastal road. Wa swept over the road and saw it packed with transport, but every vehicle was stopped, he said. Everywhere there were tiny trails of dust where the enemy crews were running into the desert. Destruction "Every bomber in ojr formation turned and sailed down the road, spillinr bombs on vehicles and men. I have never seen such scenes of destruction. There were two fires burning when we arrived at this particular spot. After we started bombing, I counted five more. Then a piece of ack-ac- k shell smashed into the windshield. Generally, allied planes have not been bothered by axis planes or fire. More than two weeks ago, the air striking force methodically started the task of wiping out axis air forces in the anti-aircra- ft desert. Early this afternoon, the enemy made a feeble effort to stop allied advancing armored cars and tanks with dive bombers. Two squadrons of allied fighters took off. One sailed s, into escorting the other into the dive bombers. Five axis planes crashed Messer-schmitt- in flames. For Cache county's Hall of Honor is hereby nominated Mrs. Leona H.
