He characterized the child'a ready and familiar replies - Intelligent The youngest lawyer in the world Is Byron Ilowse Gilbert, of Atchison, Kan. At the tender age of seven he has successfully passed a rigid examination before the Supreme Court Justices, and is the proud possessor of a certificate of admission to the bar, to take effect when he shall reach bis The precious document, to majority. which is attached an immense gold seal, is guarded with the most jealous care by the infantile barrister. Little-Byrois a son of Judge W. D. Gilbert, who astonished the learned jurors the other day by leading the boy before the judges of the Supreme Court and requesting that he be examined for admission. They all took the proposition as a joke, but Chief Justice Doster fired a simple question at him, and he answered it so promptly and with such a confident air that the justices were startled. By degrees more profound For legal subjects were led up to. about- an iiour the boy withstood a cross lire of the moBt technical and perplexing questions from all three SuHIb ready and corpreme judges. rect answers caused the greatest surprise. Time after time did the justices endeavor to entrap the boy lawyer, but every BHch effort was futile. Not only did the questions embrace fundamental law, as treated by Blackstone and Cooley and as made by the general trend of decisions, but they also covered the technique of the law practice. The boy was asked how he would handle different classes of cases, being given statements of facts. Either by Intuition or actual knowledge he seemed to readily and clearly grasp the case, and his idea regarding the proper mode of procedure was in every instance concurred in, not only by the judges, but by the lawyers present. His judgment, as well as his knowledge of law, seemed infallible. By a unanimous court the boy lawyer waa granted a certificate of admission to the bar, which was duly drawn up by the clerk of the court In general appearance little Byron is not unlike other boys of his age, except in the sharp, intelligent look of the eye. When he begins talking, however, the difference is at once apparent His English is correct and his words well chosen. His mind does not dwell upon trivial subjects common to most boys. He converses on current topics of the day with the reckless abandon of the politician. When he gets into legal or philosophical subjects he became intensely earnest. Byron told the men who were present at his examination that he was a Republican and Methodist He said he believed in a protective tariff and He was in favor of Cubimetallism. ban Independence and the annexation of Hawaii. He said that he would rather talk to his father about law than play marbles, although he expressed a fondness for some kinds of sports and exercises. UNITED BY WHISKY. Bow John Barleycorn Overcame tbo Fear of Yellow Fever. An amusing story is told in connec- tion with a conference that occurred on the line of the Illinois Central railroad between representatives of the Mississippi and Louisiana boards of health while the fever was running high, says the New Orleans States. Two trains bearing the officials of both states met at a lonely sidetrack and the Mississlpplans Informed the Louisianians that the conference must be held at distance of sixty feet This was agreed to and the parley proceeded, the distance between the parties being strictly observed. In the course of the talk on health matters, which is a rather dry subject, some one on the Louisiana side produced a bottle of whisky, took a swig and passed it to his comrades, who repeated the operation. The Misslssipplans saw what was going on, smacked their lips and boldly advanced ten feet Once more the bottle passed from Louisianian to Louisianian. This was more than the Misslssipplans could stand and they pushed their line forward twenty more feet, faltered and then charged with a whoop. In less time than it takes to tell it Mississippi and Louisiana were clasped in each other's embrace, and the latter, appreciating the formers capacity, produced several bottles and nobody thought about germs. We relate this pleasant little story merely to show that John Barleycorn la a power and can conquer even the fear of yellow fever. A Are for Five Yean.
