Mountainville Camp, Daughter of Utah Pioneers, and citizens of Alpine fittingly observed the 84th anniversary of the granting " of the City Charter Wednesday evening of last week. The three remaining native pioneers, Martha Mar-tha Healey Wilkins, Samuel O. Strong and Albert J. Adams were honored with a tribute from Mrs. George A. Brown, captain of the DUP camp, and Mrs. Ralph Smith, secretary, presented each with a volume of "Heart Throbs of the West", true pioneer history his-tory and stories. Story of the charter presentation presenta-tion was told by Mrs. Si Bennett, historian, who also told how the camp was trying to raise funds to place three historical markers in the city, one to mark the first church, the first grave, and the old fort which was built to pro tect the settlers from the Indians. Feature of the evening was a four-act melo-drama, "The Girl of the Whispering Pines," produced pro-duced by Richard W. Weiser and Jennie Wilde. Cast of characters included LuDene Adams in the leading role, Emma Riggins, Keith Beck, Howard Healey, Elmo Young, Robert Bennett, and a sheriff's posee composed of David Street, Raymond Adams, Paul Newman, Jerry McDaniel, Lester Healey and George Brown. Eugene Eu-gene Stokes was stage manager and Mildred C. Bair played the musical accompaniment. Between the acts there were singing of western songs by the posee and a puppet show by Mrs. Wilde, her daughter Ada Mae and Louise Whitby. Scenery, especially designed for the play was built by Howard Healey and Keith Beck, and the stage for the puppet shew was built by Robert Bennett. Refreshments furnished by the Camp members were sold and lunch was served the cast by the camp officers, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Edward W. Burgess, Miss Orlean Beck, Mrs. Bennett and Mrs. Wilde. Beginning February 5 Federal Old Age Insurance Program Explained Whatever it may be called in trie books, the Federal old-age insurance program is not con-considered con-considered by 65-year-olds as a retirement system which puts them "on the shelf." According to Sherman H. Ruesch, manager of the Social Security Administration's Admin-istration's Provo Field Office, more than two-thirds of the wage earners 65 years of age or over who are filing claims for benefits intend to continue in or return to some type of gainful employment. Is this contrary to the law? Here is the way the Provo Man ager answers that question: "Any insured worker may file his application for benefits as soon as he reaches 65. This pro cess cf filing a claim perman ently establishes his eligibility. From then on, for the remainder of his life, he may receive bene fit payments for all months in which he does not work In em ployment covered by the Social Security law. All he needs to do is notify us when he starts and when he stops working in covered cov-ered employment. "Many older workers 'retire' during winter months, during periods of slack employment, during periods of poor health, or when they just decide to take a rest. Many others change to jobs that are not covered. In all of these situations they may receive re-ceive their monthly payments. Whether or not they intend to permanently retire Is immaterial. Most of them don't consider themselves as retired, and the fact that they don't have to is one of the things they like about the old-age and survivors insurance in-surance plan." Mr. Sterling K. Peterson, Field Representative, will be in the City Hall at American Fork on Thursday, January 27, 1949 at 10:00 a. m. He will be available to answer any questions you might have.
