Development of a highly sensitive electronic instrument in-strument capable of detecting the presence of some compounds weighing weigh-ing only a billionth of a gram was announced by Northwestern univer sity. The university said the instru ment, called the fluorimeter, could complete in a few minutes some nu tritional experiments formerly re quiring months. It added the in strument would find wide use in chemical laboratories and assist in the standardization of drug products and in the control of quality in food production. Dr. Theodore E. Friedemann, associate as-sociate professor of physiology, who developed the instrument with co operation of Georee S. Liebeck. American Telephone and Telegraph L-o. engineer, described its operation as follows: All compounds in nature ahsorh light Some, such as vitamins, emit light In higher wave lengths. This light, called fluorescence, is invisi ble to the naked eye In the quantities measured, but readily detected with tne instrument. ComDutations de termine the quantity In a comnound irom which the glow emanates. I W A AT T AHQ !Leal Blanks for all purposes at IF xx ll X 21 U O Sun office, 189 W. Main.
