State Street .... Lehi Bureau Of Mines Exoands F, ' ? tv " ? r ? - c " f ? V . , .V i ' H, 1 r ,Zt fV Laboratory Engineer testing at new Bureau of Mines Station, near University Uni-versity of Utah, Enlargement of this plant has just been announced. The trueism that mining is a one crop industry makes it mandatory manda-tory that much attention be given to scientific research so that none of the hidden grains ot mineral are overlooked. Only a certain grade of ore will stand shipment on a certain metal market, presenting a problem that is always facing the mine operator. A mining company finds it necessary nec-essary to maintain engineering and geological departments, while smelters smelt-ers are continually conducting research re-search into metallurgy. The federal government aids in this function of mining through the bureau of mines. In May, 1940, the bureau of mines opened a new $300,000 plant adjoining the University of Utah campus at Salt Lake City. The metallurgical division ot the bureau bu-reau was placed in charge. The coming of the station marked a ' new step in the fulfillment of a desire for closer contact between this experimental branch and the mining industry, and Salt Lake City was chosen due to its strategic strate-gic location with relation to min ing. " ' " Already expansion of the Utah station has been found necessary in order to meet conditions brought about by the current war emergency. emer-gency. An announcement has Just been made of the addition of another story to the present building build-ing at a cost of approximately $80,000. New equipment costing in the neighborhood of $100,000 will be installed. The primary purpose of the new addition is to study the problem ot strategic minerals, or minerals upon up-on which this country has depended depend-ed on imports in the past Among these are manganese and chrome. Several deposits of manganese are known to exist in Utah and surrounding states, and it is confidently con-fidently hoped that new industries will be added to the state as a result of these experiments. The mining industry is cooperating in this movement. A strategic minerals min-erals committee, consisting of members mem-bers of the mining profession has been appointed to assist In any way possible in the development and processing of strategic minerals. - March 22, 1941 Mr. J. A. Mc-Naughton, Mc-Naughton, vice-president and general gen-eral manager of the Los Angeles Union Stock Yards says . . . With eyery indicaUon pointing towards Increasing In-creasing demand for meat foods during the period of the present emergency in the United States, it would seem that the livestock industry in-dustry is going to play an immensely immense-ly important part in the defense program. The old saying "an army marches on its stomach," means that soldiers must have meat, and the U. S. soldier consumes a large amount of beef. Fortunate it is that the United States is in unusually favorable posi tion to supply meat foods both to soldiers and civilians. The most re cent crop report issued by the U. S. Department of Agriculture shows that the March condition of western ranges is the highest in Just about 11 years. The winter has been mild in almost every section, and there has been more dry feed available for cattle and sheep than usual. Arizona and California have very favorable range conditions, due to the heavy rains which have been followed by warm, growing weather. During tne last week or two, heavy snow storms have brought much needed moisture to the Rocky Mountain country, where there had been considerable fear of drouth conditions in toe spring months. Some of the northern states are still likely to be short of stock water and irrigation water due to the subnormal sub-normal amount of snow in the mountain areas. The cattle market continues to carry a firm undertone. Choice Wyoming-fed steers scored $12.10 at the Los Angeles Union Stock Yards, the highest price paid on the Los Angeles market since the fall of 1930. There was some minor reaction re-action in the cattle market last week, but competent market observers observ-ers believe this weakness tempor ary as there appears to be no bur densome supplies of cattle in sight for some time to come, due to tne lateness of the California grass sea son. The hoe market also has a strong undertone and choice grain-fed butcher hogs have reached $9.25 a cwt., with the bulk of good to choice 160 to 240-pound butchers quoted at $8.75 to $9.15. Fat lambs continue in active de mand at fully steady prices. Old cron. fed lambs in full fleece are considered quotable up to $11 a cwt. The spring lamb movement from California is later than usual, but the abundance of green feed makes it quite certain that California's Cali-fornia's early lambs will be fat and of a choice quality.
