When I was Just "a baby my mother went to London to live and when I was six yeara of age I was sent to Franca with two of , mjr cousins, young ladles, who were going go-ing there to school I went Into the kindergarten department, my cousins expecting me .to stay In Franca until they had finished their schooling. , I had been in France nineteen months when - my mother first heard the gospel preached by the Mormon Elders, which ahe soon embraced as ahe knew that it was true, then ahe came to France and brought me home. It being a Catholic school and I was learning quit fast, my mother did not want me to get attached to this religion for which I am thankful. I was baptized in my eighth year and am thankful that my dear mother embraced em-braced the gospol in her native land. As her desire was to gather with the saints, w left England in the year 1855, crossing the ocean in a sailing ship cajiea the John J. Boyd. We left the docks November 2 and landed In Castle Gardens, New Tork, the following January, being eleven weeks on the sea, which was very rough. An epidemic of measles broke out on board and sixty-three children died of this complaint I was taken down with it but through the faith and prayers of the brethren breth-ren I was healed. We stayed in New Tork until the spring of 1857 when we moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, and on the 25th of May we started on our Journey Jour-ney across the plains, traveling thirteen hundred and sixty miles with the Israel Evans hand cart company, my mother pulling tha cart and myself pushing behtna. Mother rode in a wagon one half day, I walked most all of the way. Sometimes I went to aleep wiiking with my head on the cart but mother said she never heard me complain. The children in the company com-pany all seemed to take their part the same way. We encountered numerous herds of Buf falos and at times had to stop and let them pass before we could travel on.
