Calne HEAD DAIRY DEPARTMENT U. 8. A. C. It is sometimes claimed by dairymen dairy-men that it Is impossible to dry up a particular cow. Generally, when a cow is milking extremely well at the close of her lactation period it is an Indication that she Is a good cow, but if that is the case this is no excuse for the herdsman's herds-man's not drying her up. If the cow is hard to dry off, the first thing to do is to change her feed. If she Is on pasture, getting good green feed, lock her up In a dry feedlot for a few days, take her green feed away from her and The Fourth ward Primary, under the direction of the officers and teachers, will present their Spring Health Festival. Poultrymen Outlines Out-lines Control of Lice and Mites There are several satisfactory methods 'of treating birds for lice. but probably the most effective and satisfactory way of destroying them is to put nicotine sulfate on the center of the perches about one-nan nour oeiore the birds go to roost at night, advises Carl Frischknecht, assistant extension poultryman of the Utah State Ag ricultural college. This liquid may be spread in a thin, narrow strip with a small paint brush, with a small oil can, or by punching a small hole in the can in which the Blackleaf Forty la purchased, one pint (or one pound) should treat about 200 feet of roosts. Inasmuch as all of the lice-nrs do not hatch at the same time, it b occasionally necessary to make second application about ten days fter the first, to eliminate this poultry parasite. Flocks may also be freed from lice by using commercial com-mercial sodium Fluoride. This Is a white powder which may be applied ap-plied to the bird by dipping, by dutLn, or by the "pinch" method. CONTROL OF MITES By W. W. Owens, U. S. A. C. EXTENSION SERVICE The alfalfa weevil parasite is a big help In controlling weevil not by saving the Immediate crop, but by making cultural control possible. When the weevil threatened destruction de-struction of the alfalfa industry a few years after it was discovered around Salt Lake City In 1905, the H. S. Department of Agriculture! sent men to Europe to see how the investigators concluded that other insect enemies preyed on the wee vil to such an extent in Europe that weevil damage was not a ser ious problem. Ten of these foreign Insect parasites of the weevil were Introduced In Utah between 1911 and the outbreak of the World War. Of two surviving species, only on-ly one Is of Importance. The egg hatches into a worm which eats the Internal por tions of the body of the weevil. The weevil is not killed at once but dies after it has completed its feeding and spun its cocoon. The parasite then emerges from the dead body of the weevil and makes a cacoon of its own inside the web-like web-like weevil cocoon. Its cocoon is dark brown, oval-shaped, about three-eighths of an Inch long with a white band around Its center. It may be found on the ground In hay fields or wherever the weevil is abundant any time from late spring to the following spring when it changes into the wasp-like form and starts laying egge in the larva of the weevil. The parasites kill 100 per cent of their early - hatched weevils but as the season advances an increasing increas-ing number of them get by. It is these later hatched weevils which unless destroyed by properly timed first cutting, mature and lay eggs the following spring which hatch into worms that damage the crop before the parasite kills them. The parasite has an important place in weevil control but it does not give complete control It must be supplemented by early cutting of first and second crops of alfalfa. -o River of Milk A milk-white river, due to the water flowing over limestone and so becoming saturated with chalk, and a lake which generates soap from its alkaljne limestone bed. are two of to curiosities of the TO (( i iTTl?i I "Take it from me here's the finest car that ever cut motoring costs."
