S. A. C. Extension Service. ods of early cutting of alfalfa as outlined out-lined In a previous article. o . Outdoors Good Place for Lighting Effect Study The study of lighting effects need not be carried on solely indoors, in theater, gallery, hall or home. There Is plenty of room for such Interest in the great outdoors, where the sources of all light exist ex-ist in their abundance. Closer inspection of natural objects ob-jects show thnt they are not all grayed, uniformly, by clouds and lack of sunshine, but still reflect what light there Is according to their nature. Thus one tree will have an appearance ap-pearance different from adjoining trees, owing to a different sort of bark, or position, which permits reflected re-flected light to filter to It. Houses, In particular, appear In entirely different lights on days dark and mimical, as they say. It may be said of them In particular, that If they appear to advantage on a rainy, gloomy day they will shine like Jewels when the sun Is throwing throw-ing Its beams upon them. No one should ever purchase t home without first visiting it on some gloomy day, preferably when It Is "pouring cats and dogs," as the old saying has it If It looks well then, It will please always. Something of the same pleasant philosophy might be applied to all life and living, but we would not care to press the matter, for so much depends upon the Individual, and his ability to accept, as well as utilize. Washington Evening Star. THE LEHI SUN, LEM, UTAH School News THURSDAY, MAY i J ,n Dusting or spraying with calcium arsenate is the best emergency method meth-od of control when weevils have become so numerous that they are checking the growth of the alfalfa. Arsenic poison sticks on the growing plant in large enough quantities to kill the worms when they start to eat the leaves and buds. Orchard spray machines may be used to spray the alfalfa. They should be able to maintain a minimum minim-um of 75 pounds pressure. A boom attachment can be made from one-half one-half inch pipe. Nozzles should be selected which will give a misty spray. Two pounds of calcium ar senate should be used for each 100 gallons of water and this mixture applied at the rate of 100 gallons per acre. Care should be taken to avoid spraying any part of the field several times. One spraying will kill the weevil and does not make the hay harmful to livestock. II a machine Is to be purchased especially for weevil control, a dust-tog dust-tog machine rather than a sprayer should be considered. A power duster dust-er capable ot covering eight acres per hour can be purchased for about $250. For many Utah farms a hand duster will suffice. Such ft machine capable of dusting one acre per hour can be purchased for about $15. Calcium arsenate so finely powdered powder-ed that no grit can be felt between the fingers, should be applied at the rate of Vk pounds per acre In dusting, dust-ing, preferably mixed with an equal quantity of dusting sulphur. Where dusting or spraying is not possible, alfalfa which is standing still or even going back because of excessive weevil damage, should be cut and removed from the field as quickly as possible. The ground should then be thoroughly stirred with sprtngtooth, to be followed by wire drag made by putting net wire or barb wire under the back ward tilted teeth of a harrow. Leave the sou In this dusty mulched con ditlon for two days and then irri gate. Due to the Increased labor expense, ex-pense, the Joss of hay, and the diff 1. culty of securing Irrigation water at the proper time, the dragging meth od of weevil control is only reccom mended as last resort as a precaution In areas where weevil damage is probable this year, every farmer should find out where he can get a machine on short notice for dusting or spraying. He should know where he can secure the cal wum arsenate. The county Bgent wui give assistance in this regard, Dusting, spraying and dragging are emergency control measures. Those of us whose mothers have passed away, can only give them an affectionate thought f We can not see them, nor commune with or visit them. But you whose mothers are yet alive, you are the ones that Mother's Day should appeal to. Are you proud of her? do you love her? You who are away tTom your mother, so you cannot see her or converse with her, have you written her a letter lately? If not, be sure and write one she can have on Mother's Day. Try and picture In your mind the smile on her sweet face, and the tear of happiness that will come in to her eyes, and how her heart will warm up for you. Pause a momen from the hurry and excitement that you may be in and let your mind go back a little and reflect on a tew things that she did for you. Your mother would ra'.tar have a smile and a kind word, or a bouquet ot flowers now while she is alive than all ti t flowers that con lc banked aiound her casket after (he has gone. I Muiy men spend more money on caskets, flowers and emblems of iriumlng than they ever spent on their poor loving, selfsacriflcing mothers for many years while they were alive. Men who, perhaps, never thought of carrying flowers to their mothers In life, pile them high on their coffins. Now If you cannot write, perhaps you can phone. How delighted she would be to hear your voice. Perhaps Per-haps she has not heard It for a long while, and it would be a great treat. She sure would enjoy it, and if you cant ao eitner, men send her a telegram. It only costs a few cents. but Oh, how it would pay In grati tude and good feeling. We do honor to great generals, who have been victorious on the battle field. We praise the great statesman, we applaud the champion In the field of sport But greater than any of these Is the world's greatest heroine your mother! Carries Eggs in Mouth Until They Are Hatched There are several species of fishes known as "Mouthbreeders," but the breeding behavior is similar in all The fish, either male or female, or both, according to the species, clears a space In the sand at the bottom of the aquaria, Into which the fe male deposits her eggs. The male then fertilizes them. Within a few minutes, either one, or the other of the parents, again according to the species, picks up the eggs In Its mouth and carries them through the period of Incubation and for few days after the fry are hatched. The Ruby Jewel fish usually turns the fry loose In about three weeks, while the Tilaplas will carry the eggs and fry as long as six weeks, The Ruby Jewel fish Is somewhat exceptional In that it first sticks Its eggs to a flat stone before picking pick-ing them up. Otherwise the behavior be-havior Is as described. One lone ant recently enjoyed the distinction dis-tinction of stopping the southbound "Flamingo" of the Louisville & Nashville. The campaign was carried out in the schools, churches and civic organizations and resulted, we be lieve, in a great deal of good. Dur ing the campaign an essay contest was sponsored by the club in the Junior High School to create greater great-er interest among the school child ren. The essay contest was won by Noel Phillips, a student of the Junior High School, and as a prize he will be awarded a book by the club. Lions Evan Croft, Dr. Ed- dlngton and H. Alvah Fitzgerald were In charge of the campaign. Following is the winning essay: RESPECT FOR PUBLIC PROPERTY Included In the question of Pub lic Property we have the consider ation of empty houses and out buildings, fences, sidewalks, roads, parks, and our wild animals, and natural resources. 'i The people pay taxes to have this property guarded and protected. pro-tected. People 'ought to respect this Public Property enough to do their part In helping to guard and protect it. " When the windows in empty buildings are broken, when the empty buildings are broken Into and the inside of the -buildings torn down and broken, yes, and even stolen, it gives the town and the people a very bad look. If a man needs a piece of lumber lum-ber and goes to the empty lot next door, tears down the fence, and I makes kindling wood out of it, he 1 Is not only a thief, but he is de grading himself and his town. If the people of a town do not have enough pride to keep up their fences by (keeping them straight up and neat, it shows lack of civic pride. When there is a contract given for the construction of a road in a town or its suberb, there ought to be some provision made whereby the people would have some place to walk in safety. If they have to walk on the road, It Is dangerous to themselves and the automobile drivers. But most people would prefer this risic to walking In the mud or dry dust along-side the road.
