Closing exercises. FOURTH WARD The public speaking contests were conducted first in the Fourth Ward, with Mahlon Peck and Elmo Russon, representing the "M" Men. Mahlon Peck was selected as first place winner. Marjorie Hardy and Lillian Rus son, represented, the Gleaner Girls In public speaking. Miss Hardy was selected winner. In the retold story the contestants were Rowene Russon and Jennie Patrick. Miss Patrick was selected winner. FIFTH WARD OPERA TO BE PRESENTED SATURDAY EVENING. EVE-NING. Saturday evening the Fifth ward M. I. A. are presenting a clever op era, entitled, "Fepita , in the High School Auditorium, commencing at 8 p. m. It is a mexican play and is under the direction of Abraham An-derson. An-derson. The dialogue Is under the direction of Fred Osterloh and Allen FJeld and Miss Leona Osterloh and Arva Wing have charge of the dancing. Those taking part are Clell Jack, son, Gail Webb, Ford Smith, Lillian Knudsen, Hugh Otterson, Barbara Lott Jay Whitman and Mack Batch- elor, besides a large chorus and a group of dancers. BUT AT BOMB Boy Climbs City Flag Pole To Put In New Rope The rope Jn the city flag pole was broken a few days ago by Eldon Turner and Horace Jackson and a real task of putting up & new rope arose, It being necessary for some one to climb the pole, which is eighty-five feet high. Clarence E, North was hired by Marshal Christofferson Wednesday morning to climb the pole and after two attempts finally reached the top and put up the new rope. It takes lots of nerve and climbing ability to reach that height Mr. Turner and Mr. Jackson will be made to pay for the rope. Webb of this city carried away sec ond place In the Salt Lake Tribune spelling bee in the Alpine-Provo division finals held at American Fork last week. Miss Webb is member of the Lehi Sixth grade. Miss Mary Barratt daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Barratt of American Fork won first place. Miss Barratt and Miss Webb won out over sixteen contestants, all champ ions of schools in Alpine district or Provo city. Both, put up a great fight for first place, but finally Miss Webb tripped on the word, "exhaust ed".
