J- Evans left Monday morning for Minneapolis, Minnesota, Minne-sota, where he will attend the University Uni-versity of Minnesota for the next few weeks. Harwood took In his early twenties, in his desire for more knowledge of art I Today, the boy who was born in' Lehl and hunted with bow and arrow, and was regarded as a "poor" student, is assistant prof. at the University of Utah and head of the art department, although he will retire from university work In the near future. "It was while hunting and fishing in Utah county thnt James T. Harwood, Har-wood, the son of James and Sarah Jane Harwood, Lehi pioneers of 1850, first sought to express the beauties of the outdoors with crayon. "Soon he had forsaken the bow and arrow for the crayon and paints and canvas. The townsfolk, didn't approve of his failure ( , to . enthuse over his studies and. many a time, Mr. Harwood said, a well-meaning citizen had stftod over his sketching board and lamented his lack of interest in-terest In education. "A " Norwegian house painter spurred Mr. Harwood to making his first move, that of entering an art school in San Francisco. That was in 1886. He attended the California School of Design, which later was the Mark Hopkins Art Institute, He won a gold medal for the excellence excell-ence of his work. He then established a ftudio in Salt Lake, but went to Paris in 1888 entering the Julienne Institute. There he studied with two well know New York artists, Frank Dumond and the later Robert Henri. Upon Mr. Harwood's return re-turn to Salt Lake in 1890, he reopened re-opened his studio. Among his students stu-dents were Mohonrl Young, sculptor; sculp-tor; A. B. Wright, Lee Green Richards, Rose Hartwell, Mary Teasdale and Myra Sawyer. Mr. Harwood became art Instructor in the Salt Lake high school In 1900, .atr belr.g associated with the East high school. He Joined the University Univer-sity of Utah faculty In 1922. "The veteran artist is leaving the university this (spring. and Mrs. Harwood plan to return to Paris soon.
