Dear Sirs: I Tie mall boat this week brought pe the Lehl Sun dated April 5th and ? though the dear old paper was over f j month old It brought me great Joy, r. & It has done lor over two years, I desire to send to you my apprecl- : atioa for the paper, for I have truly ! learned to love and appreciate) Its cages. I suppose it Is natural for one to love, and look forward to home news when one Is on the other side f of the world, 13,000 miles from the ; "old home town. ' K I have greatly enjoyed my labors in "Sunny Africa."; I have learned to ; love the country and its people. In- ' deed, I may say, it has become to me ' a "second home," and South Africa '! will always hold a very .warm I position in my heart. f. When I first arrived In Africa, twenty-nine months ago, It was I December,-" the height of Africa's ? glorious summer. The jCape here was a blaze of color, the country seemed I one huge garden, and the beauty of I that garden was most wonderful. . ! I was assigned to labor in this gar-S gar-S den, and for Ave months I daily received re-ceived much Joy and happiness from my work. . I Our mission , headquarters are located fn this district at Mowbray, II about four miles from Cape Town, easily reached from the mother city by train, bus or tram. Cape Town is a very modern city with a white popu lation of 130,000, the colored com munity numbers 94,000. It " is- the legislative capitol - of the Union of South Africa, and a university ' city, The Latter-day Saint people here are treated kindly and with respect. May of 1926 I was transferred to Bloemfontein the capitol of the Orange Free State, and the center of the Dutch speaking community, ; 750 miles from Cape Town. It is a beau tiful little city with a white popu lation of 22,500 there are 23,500 color I ed people here. I labored in the Free State for four months, after which I was transferred to Kimberley, 105 miles away. Kimberley is a city of 17,000 whites and 21,000 colored people. Situated In the heart of the great African Karoo. Kimberley is said to be the hottest place in South Africa. Indeed it does get very warm as I was able to learn during my fifteen months there. . This city dates from 1870 when dimonds were first discovered on the farms of DuLoits Pan and Bulfontein. The insulng rush speedily created an extensive mining camp, which ' in course of years, gradually developed into the substantially built township of the present day. The diamond Industry is the eame Interesting game it was many years ago. And each day 8,000 cars of "blue ground" on diamond hearing rock, are removed. From this rock $75,000 to $90,000 worth of diamonds are recovered daily. ' Toward the end of 1927 I enjoyed a visit to the Transvaal, here I visited the cities of Johannesburg , and. Pretoria. . Johannesburg dates from Septem ber, 1886. But in that short time I from 1886 to 1928, it has become the largest and most modern city of South Africa. It has a white and colored population of 300,000, of these 170,000 are white. The city is 957 miles from Cape Town. Situated here are the world's ; richest gold deposits. . ' Pretoria is forty miles from Johannesburg and Is the Administra tive capitol of South Africa. . This is another modern and beautiful city. After my visit to the Transvaal I was transferred to the Cape District, and arrived here December 15, 1927. Since that time I have been keeping very happy in doing the work there is to do. I have been treated very kindly by both the Dutch and English speaking people, and as I said before, I have learned to love them dearly. These is a great work to be done here, but each year finds the Latter-day Saints In the land stronger than the year before, and the work of spreading the Gospel is going ahead in a most pleasing manner.. Again, let me thank you very warmly warm-ly for sending the paper to me. Rest assurd, from now on, hence forth and forever I am a booster for the Lehl Sun, my paper. Sincerely yours, Elder Noel G.
