Show PA HE TWO Byron J. Whipple Writes of Conditions In Germany Pforzheim I B, Feb. 18, 192S. Editor of the Lehi "Sua" Lehi, Utah, U. S. A. Dear Sir: I have often thought of writing to you and thanking you ,for the paper, ua me aeea takes more effort but tnaa the thought I have nevnr lioon leen able to do so, I really enjoy the Sun It has often been the means of helping me repaint the scenes of my home town. I have often thought that we do not aoDrecliita iiutt ... have at home uutil We am v frrnn them. Since I have been iu Germany 1 have seen a great deal that would have been hard to believe If I had not BKt-n mem ana aid not know that they really existed. One example of this Is the attitude that the people take toward different questions ques-tions that exist In the world today. We never think of the world as these people do. They have a much differ-ent differ-ent understanding of things than we have. It was very hard for me to vnurcn and. Government ould be very closely connected, "tout tney are almost one and the same organization. They would make you mink that they are npnunta h reality they are very closely connected. connect-ed. The people have to pay a Church Tax and the pastors are hired hy the State, and they have to preach that which the politicians proscribe or they lose their positions. In short , u. murcn ana state are the same thing. There are three, eovernmfmtiv supported churches, Catholic, Luther- iu, ana jewisn. Before the war these were the only onea allowed to work openly. Our missionaries were uuco surpressed at that time, i vieuuiic. we are able to work openly, but occasionally the police try to scare us. out, hut they are not really able to do anything. We have eome amusing experiences some times. The other day a man vanie into tne ward In front of the chapel. He wanted to know it the inoraisnen- Held their meetings flume one torn him the truth and then he "cut loose" and "cussed" Mormons for all he could think of. It would seem that we had been to his door that morning and given his wife a tract. This had caused a stir in the family, and he said that if we came around again he would have us arrested. Another time one of the missionaries tried to register with the police, and after keeping his passport for a week they summoned him to the Police Head Quarters and told him that they thought that it would be best i,f he did not try to preach here. The reason that they gave was that the province of Baden was already too thickly populated. They, I suppose, had asked about us, and some one had told them that we preached and .practiced polygammy. They then drew their own conclusions as to the purpose of our work. I really enjoy my work here among the German people, and we as church are having a little success. The people as a rule are very hospitable, and as a .people they are more religious than the average American Still when you say that they are more religious than the average .American jiu dunsi rrmemuer mat tney as a people think more in terms of religion than we as a people do. But when it cornea to moral conditions of the' country I believe we would stand very high. However we will have to work cr we may fall into the same tr worse conditions than exist in Europe today. Although the people are very poor they try to do that which is for the best. Their poverty 1,3 largely due to the war and the Internal panic that ,oHcved the war. While mentioning the war I am Inclined to think that we do not really understand Just what the term means unless we have leen in It. '.Many times I have listened listen-ed to the Saint. tell about their nightly night-ly lights to the cellar, to protect themselves from the enemy air at-Jacks. at-Jacks. They tell cf bombs belli-? dropped drop-ped in circus tenta In the middle of the performance and of the terrible scenes that followed. They tell of eating almost anything for food, sugar beets were an extraordinary luxury, ueaiiy tney iiaa to endure a lot that, we never even dreamed about. It Is really a pleasure to be able to represent such a people as the Mor mon people. There are many stories at large about what we believe that what our fore fathers did and be- Iieved, but If we continue to live and follow the high Ideals of our fathers and remain true to the faith for which mnany have died, the truth will win in the end. I wish to thank you again for the paper, and I remain, IJespectfully, Byron J. Whipple. 0 ii.. Implanted Desire The majority of authorities consider con-sider banger as Instinct.
