Center 0 The federal government has a new statutory requirement that all payments of social security and any other recurring federal payments, such as government pensions and salaries, welfare and veterans benefits, be made by Direct Deposit, beginning Jan. 1, 1999. Payments are sent electronically to the designated receiving account, which eliminates the need to print and mail checks. The money is in the account and available at the beginning of business on the payment date, or sometimes it's even a day earlier. An electronic payment for example costs the government about two cents compared with an average cost of 43 cents per check. The money saved remains in the Social Security Trust Fund for future payments. With more than 31 million recipients, millions of dollars will be saved monthly. Direct Deposit should also prevent more than 100,000 crimes per year involving mail theft and check forgery, and eliminate millions of inquiries regarding lost or delayed checks.
