Show Free Press - Wednesday, March 19, 1997 - Page 3 Police investigate vandalism A Lehi man was booked into the Utah County Jail on charges of criminal mischief after breaking out the windows on a car belonging to his wife's nephew, explaining to the investigating detective that he was upset that the owner parked the vehicle on the lawn. The owner of the vehicle estimated the damages to the windows at more than $2,000, with additional damage done to the body of the car. A Lehi woman reported that the window to her car had been broken by an unknown suspect and a rock during the night. Upon investigation, the car remained locked and nothing was removed from the vehicle. The car sustained about $200 in damages. In another criminal mischief case, a money box at a local business was damaged to the tune of $200, although the employee on duty at the time the crime was reported said that no money had been taken. When officers arrested a Lehi man for a $1,000 warrant, the man was found to be in possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. The man was booked into the county jail for the warrant as well as for possession of paraphernalia and Police reported to police that she had a small child wandering around in a northeast Lehi neighborhood. According to the officer, the child could not talk much, but seemed upset that he could not locate his house. The officer walked with the child for a few blocks, and after about 30 minutes, a black car stopped and the female driver identified herself as the child's neighbor. The neighbor was able to take the child and the officer to the child's home, where the mother told the officer she thought the two year old had been playing at a seen Beat marijuana in a drug free zone. A Sanpete County man was charged with several offenses in connection with a traffic stop for driving under the influence (DUD of alcohol. The officer observed that the vehicle not only had faulty equipment, but that the man drove on top of the traffic island at one point while he was being observed. Later, the officers discovered that the license plates did not match the registration for the vehicle. The man failed both field sobriety and breath tests, and in addition to the DUI charge, the man was cited for driving on a denied license, no proof of insurance and having the wrong plates on the vehicle; he was released to the custody of a responsible individual. Concerned citizens were instrumental in locating the parents of two small children in separate incidents. In the first case, a citizen neighbor's house. When a three year old child entered a local business and ordered a cup of coffee, an employee notified police of the situation. The officer followed the child to his home, where the mother said that she thought he had been riding his bike in the yard. A juvenile was referred to Juvenile Court in connection with a residential burglary in which he admitted to taking a cellular phone from a Lehi home. When confronted, the youth said he would return the phone. A portable radio valued at $600 was taken from a local school. The case is still under investigation. Mow at our Open new Burning season announced According to Dale Ekins, Lehi City Fire Chief, open burning will be allowed between April 5 and May 4, 1997, by permit only. Citizens desiring a burning permit should call the Lehi City to leave their offices, name and phone number. A member of the Lehi Fire Department will visit the proposed burn address and issue a permit at no charge, starting about one week prior to the dates listed above. An Open Burning Checklist will be given that lists the guidelines for open burning within the city limits. The Air Conservation Act allows the burning of weed growth along ditch banks, incident to clearing those ditches for irrigation purposes. The clearing of weed growth, however, does not include the burning of trash, garbage or other debris deposited in or along ditch banks. Burning incident to horticultural or agricultural operations, which includes prunings from trees, bushes and plants; dead or diseased trees, including stubble in open fields, may be burned at anytime, subject to receiving a permit, insuring that the fire will be completely out by 6 p.m. each day. 76 S. 360 E. He returned to Lehi to the family .farm. Norman met his future wife, Claire Gill, while riding on horseback in the July 24, 1919 parade. The soldiers, dressed in their service uniforms, rode their horses into the parade route single file going north and young ladies rode into the parade route from the east. That meeting blossomed into a g romance that started with their marriage in the Salt Lake Temple on Nov. 21, 1923. Claire passed away on April 1, 1987. The Normans had three children: Mrs. Charlie (Edna) Hawke, life-lon- Provo; Mrs. Alvin (Elaine) Schow, Mrs. Lehi; and daughter-in-law- , Kay (Sherlean) Stone, wife of Delbert G. Norman, now deceased. Commander Carl "Blackie" Harris, along with post members Don Peet, Harold Fenn and Alvin Schow, gave him a lifetime membership card and told him to "live another hundred years to use it." Senator Robert Bennett and Third District Representative Chris Cannon, sent plaques, and District Four Commander Ken Nix presented Norman with another plaque from the American Legion National Commander. Governor d Michael Leavitt also sent a pin with the number 100. Harris believes Norman to be the last survivor of the approximately 100 Lehi men who served in World War I. Norman has been a member of the local post form more than 35 years and was active in the post in his earlier years.
