Statewide, the average school tax on an $80,000 home equipment, business machinery, factories and other commercial buildings. The proposed leeway is greater on property than other homes because they are asking for three mills on 20 of the assessed value of this property rather than the three mills on 15 of the value of a home. state average. Poor budgeting is the real reason for the tax increase. Alpine School District has spent more than it has is $384. The Alpine School District tax on the same home is $404. If the voted leeway is approved, Alpine's tax would rise to $433, or 13 more than the increase would not be offset by reductions in other levies. When Provo and Ogden School Districts recently passed voted leeway elections, they lowered other areas of their levies by economizing in budgets. Their leeway taxes were offset by reductions in other levies. Because there was no net tax increase, voters approved the leeway tax. Alpine School District has not agreed to reduce other levies. Passage of the leeway would result in a net tax hike. The non-operati- ng Once approved, the voted leeway will be a permanent tax. It is not a temporary tax to meet temporary needs. The State of Utah guarantees that Alpine will have the same number of dollars per student as any other school district regardless of student growth or size of tax base. In the coming school year the state guarantees $1,180 per student which is added to state and federal aid. This guarantees that Alpine School District will never be substandard in the money it needs to educate our children. Leeway supporters are counting on a low voter turnout to enable a few special interests to force this permanent tax increase on all of us.
