Show Free Press - Thursday, August 26, 1982 - Page 3 PTA Schedules Public Meetings with School Board Candidates Lehi Resident Rockwell Announces Board Candidacy John W. Rockwell of Lehi is announcing . bis candidacy for membership on the Alpine District School Board, representing Precinct 5. This district covers Lehi, Cedar Fort, Alpine, Highland and north America Fork. Mr. Rockwell was born and raised in 'Lehi where he attended local schools. He was a graduate of Lehi High.' He also attended Dixie College for one year and graduated from the BYU with a BA in history and Spanish. '" Following college, Mr. Rockwell taught High School in Duchesne for two years. While there he developed and directed a drop-ou- t prevention program for Duchesne District and He , Uinta County Juvenile Court. presently teaches in the Granite School District where he has taught since 1975. Mr. Rockwell married Norma Jean Clark of LehL They had one daughter and two sons. His wife and daughter were killed in 1978. In 1981 Mr. Rockwell married Kathie Lee Walker, of American Fork, they have one son. Active in the LDS Church, Mr., Rockwell served a mission to Mexico. He has been a Branch President and held various other positions. He currently serves as Elders Quorum Instructor. Mr. Rockwell has also been active in community affairs. He is presently of the Library a member Development Committee. Rockwell feels that : too ' otten members of the school board are inexperienced in educational theory and practices. "I'm qualified to run for the office. I've been in education for nine years. Being an educator I have a unique opportunity to see what educational philosophies work in the classroom. I feel that with my experience I can better serve the students, citizens and taxpayers," he explained. several Rockwell expressed concerns about education in Alpine School District, "One of my major concerns now is the competency-base- d If educational practices. students can't pass the exams given to evaluate if they can graduate, what help will be given to help them Lehi citizens are invited to meet the candidates running for the Alpine School District from Precinct Five at 7 p.m. at the Lehi High School Little Theatre on Tuesday, August 31. The Meet the Candidate Night is being sponsored by the Valley PTA Council. Everyone is encouraged to attend. Anyone unable to attend that night are invited to the American Fork High School on September 2nd when the American Fork PTA Council is sponsoring a Meet the Candidate Night. Candidates from Precinct Five who are campaigning for the Alpine School District Board are Steve Denier, Tim R. Eisenhart, LaMar C. Hatch, Reese H. Johnson, John W. Richard R. Sudweeks, Rockwell, Kenneth D. Whimpey (incumbent) and Fred T. Wright. Lehi-Ced- WW pass?" Political Races Heat Up As Primary Nears , Ray Beckham and Howard C. Nielson, Republican candidates for United States Representatives from District No. 3 are waging a tough and competitive campaign which will continue until one or the other is eliminated in the September 14 Primary elections. Another heated campaign is being waged by Neal B. Evans and DeAnn for State candidates Palmer, Representative from District No. 57. Palmer is a businesswoman from Lehi and Evans is a dentist in American Fork. John McGinn is running against Ronald McKay Smith for county assessor and Gary J. Anderson is running against Michael G. Sullivan for two-yea- r county commissioner. Another interesting race is between Jay Fitt and Noal Wootton both running for county attorney. Wootton is the incumbent fighting to regain his office. Fitt was assistant county attorney until he was fired by Wootton last year. elections for State In Board of Education Board Member from District 7 the following are vying for the position: Bruce E. non-partis- Re-ele- ct Building design is another of Rockwell's concerns. He thinks some buildings are monuments to the architect and not monuments to education. Another concern of Rockwell's is curriculum design, especially in vocational needs of the students. He feels students need more specific direction and that classes should be designed to meet the students needs in choosing their vocations. Bammes, Howard W. Bar ben, Karleen B. Barker, Donald G. Christensen, Kenneth R. Larsen and Afton Healey. Candidates for Alpine School District Board Member, Precinct 5 are: Steve Denier, Tim R. Eisenhart, LaMar c. Hatch, Reese H. Johnson, John W. Rockwell, Richard R. Sudweeks, Kenneth D. Whimpey and Fred T. Wright. Vying for the position of Justice of Peace in Precinct 1 are Michael J. "Mick" Elkins, Julian Mercer and Ada P. Robinson, incumbent. Lehi voters are most interested in the race for state representative District 57 between Neal B. Evans and DeAnn Palmer. Some Lehi citizens are expressing the fear that the vote will be split eight ways in the Alpine School District Board race. A concern of all the candidates is that because there is no democratic in this election the primary Democrats will stay home.
