Although forest lands have received much moisture this winter, the danger of fire is always present. Please be careful in building and extinguishing campf ires, sports-writer- s of group recently voted pro rodeo bull riding as the single most dangerous sporting event, anywhere. There's one huge, ugly reason for that - the brahma crossbred bull used in this event. Ranging from 1300 lbs. to 2100 lbs., a bucking bull is a huge mass of muscle, loose hide, horns and a lot of meanness. It's often stated that the bull rider is the most "macho" among Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association cowboys. To the youngster, it's perhaps the most enticing lifestyle because of the glory of being a world bull riding champ, but the dues to pay are often quite heavy for a bull rider. There's a direct parallel between bulls and bull riders, that being to never accept defeat. Pro rodeo bulls will stop at no lengths to buck the cowboy off and many times will charge the cowboy with serious harm intended. Four-tim- e PRCA world champ Don Gay often has stated, "Riding a bull to the whistle is only half the challenge, you then have to excape. However, I don't run from fear of the bull, I just can't afford to get hurt. If it weren't for that I might stay and negotiate with the bull. Note that I said, I might stay!" It is estimated that among all 51 PRCA stock contractors in the United States and Canada near $5 million is invested in bull flesh, alone. The average life span of a bucking bull is about 12 years, with the bull beginning his career near age five. As a whole the best bucking bulls come from the southern states because a bull does better in a warmer climate. One of modern day rodeo's most notorious bucking bulls,"Oscar" has been retired to the Prorodeo Hall of Champions in Colorado Springs, Colo. Though he wasn't present to accept the Oscar for the best documentary film of 1972, Oscar (not named for the award) was one of the three principles in Keith Merrill's "The Great American Cowboy." PRCA world champions Larry Mahan and Phil L yne were the other two stars. Oscar, now 14 years old, has been bucked more than 300 times with only 1 successful rides on his back. Don Gay has been on Oscar five times, claiming the edge by riding him three of those. One of those trips made pro rodeo history at San Francisco's Grand National Rodeo in the Cow Palace in 1977. Gay and Oscar brought the whole house to its feet for a ride, the highest marked ride in pro rodeo (100 points is a perfect score). California cowboy Allan Jordan rode Oscar for a ride in 1978. One could say Oscar is a "good" draw! The bulls bring another integral part of pro rodeo on the scene, the pro rodeo bullfighter. Its a twofold job for the bullfighter, often called clown. His first responsibility is to protect the bull rider from injury, by acting as a decoy or by freeing the cowboy should his hand become "hung-up- " in his rope. His second function is to make the bull "turn back" soon after he's out of the chute. Bull riders want this, as the bull that spins in a tight circle while bucking is harder to ride, thus scoring more points. The bullfighter may dress funny and go through humorous antics but his job is a very serious one. Realistically, the bull is almost prehistoric in appearance. He moves slow when he wants and he hurries when he wants. Many sport a set of horns some five feet in width and the smart bull knows just how to use his weapons. All this makes pro rodeo bucking bulls a dangerous and unique breed. 1 10. Pamela Grant a Greg Price won first place Tennis Doubles. -- Model WWA7070B |
