Show THE LEHI FKEE PRESS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1960 VvvwvwvVvM i John R. Smith, Lehi Musician. Dies in Richfield Apartment Fire ; John Raymond Smith, 41, son of Ralph M. Smith of this city and well known musician, lost his life in an apartment fine in Richfield, early Sunday morning. He was pronounced dead from suffocation about an hour after firemen reached the scene of a smoke-fille- d burning apartment. The victim, native of Cedar Fort and former music instructor in Lehi, was found slumped near a radiator beneath a window by members of the Richfield Volunteer Fire Department in a third-stor- y apartment in the Peterson Bank Building at Main and Center streets in Richfield. The fire department was notified by an unidentified girl who saw smoke coming out of the windows of the third floor apartments while six.- - was on her way to work. Minutes later, when firemen arrived, the five apartments were in flames. The other occupants were evacuated safely and were uninjured. Mrs. Mary Jerome oi' Salt Lake City, was trapped on the balcony of the apartments by the flames. fireman Hearing her screams, Howard Casey broke through the door, threw a blanket over her head and brought the woman to safety. The door to Mr. Smith's apartment was locked and no one knew he was in the room until after the blaze was brought under control, a period of about 45 minutes. A resuscitator was employed for about an hour by the firemen ,in an attempt to revive Air. Smith. A physician arrived on the scene at 7:15 a.m. and pronounced him dead at 7:22 a.m. Fireman Casey reported that the windows had been blown out when they arrived on the scene at about 6:30 a.m. and smoke was boiling through them. It was estimated that the smoke had been for several hours. accumulating Sevier County Deputy Sheriff Mervin Colby, who investigated the fire, said it was believed the fire started from a burning cigarette in 'Mr. Smith's bedroom. He had apparently been smoking in the bedroom and had gone into the living room and fallen asleep on the couch. It appeared he had tried to get to a window from the couch but was overcome by the smoke, the deputy sheriff said. Mr. Smith had lived in the apartment since Oct. 1. and had been teaching guitar in Richfield. Mrs. Jerome had been associated with him in selling instruments, and had occupied an apartment in the front of the building. Mr. Smith's apartment was in the rear of the third floor apartment section. The second floor is used as office space by various government agencies, and the first by the Bradshaw Auto Parts Co. Mr. Smith had visited here only a few days previously, to see his father, convalescing after major surgery. It will be recalled by numerous friends and neighbors here that he gave guitar lessons from a studio maintined here during 1956, and also operated other studios in various sections of the state. Gifted in music, he was well known in Salt Lake City, and throughout the western area. He was born in Cedar Fort, Dec. 18, 1918, a son of Ralph M, and Elizabeth Shelton Smith. He was married and later divorced. He had spent the greater part of his life in Salt Lake City.
