Show LEHI FREE PRESS, I.EHT, UTAH Seastrand Family Breaks Record In Attendance Reports Show Great Salt Lake Heavily Polluted; Jordan River Contributes Editor's Note: This is the third in a series of articles on water and sewage pollution problems in Utah. The information is taken from a report prepared by the Committee on Sewage and Water Pollution of the Utah State Medical Association. Great Salt Lake is heavily polluted principally by the raw, untreated sewage from Salt Lake City, but also from the contaminated Jordan River water, and by raw sewage from all of the towns along the east shore of the lake. More than 15 towns discharge their sewers into the Great Salt Lake. The bacteriocidal and bacteriostatic powers of the concentrant-e- d salt polution is a matter of some uncertainty. Some studies have been done in the past which would seem to indicate that it has rather high bactericidal power. Other studies, however,, have indicated that a great variety of organisms are present in the water. It would seem that further carefully conducted investigations might well be carried out in this field as a public health project. Regardless of the antiseptic powers of the water, however, there still remain definite health threats in connection with the lake and sewage. It has been suggested, for example, that heavy brine does not mix readily with fresh water and therefore that at sewage outlets the heavily contaminated fresh water may float on top of the salt water for long periods of time and, hence, continue a health hazard. It is definitely known, too, that many birds, especially ducks, The beaches are also contaminated by sewage from the bath houses at the beaches. An open ditch from the industrial center Arms Plant) (old Remington where there is a primary sewage plant, carries incompletely treated sewage to the lake and joins the latter very near a large salt plant where salt is recovered commercially by evaporation. The Salt Lake City sewer svs-- i tern delivers its sewage partially by gravity and partially by pump-- j ing to the northwest section oj the city where it becomes an open ditch, filthy, foul, blackish and bubbling. It continues as an open ditch out to the Great Salt Lake without emptying into the Jordan Lehi River as many people seem to beWater from this sewage weekly newspaper devoted to lieve. canal has been known to be used the interests and welfare of in irrigation of truck gardens and Lehi CRy other crops in this area. Likewise, muskrats and fish which are caught must be grossly contaminated. Mosquitoes, gnats and flies around the marshes are probably carried by winds to cities and towns in this vicinity, especially Salt Lake City. In addition, the lake is used extensively for bathing and to a fsser degree for boating.
