Parley Smoot Members of the family from California, several points in Idaho, and all parts of Utah were present Abraham Owen Smoot was In charge of the second company of pioneers following Brigham Young into the Great Salt Lake valley, in 1847; first mayor of Salt Lake and organizer of the Salt Lake police force. He led the first group of settlers into Utah valley, building the old, orginal road around the point of the mountain, and later, leading in the settling of Provo, and later Salem. He was mayor of Provo for fourteen years, representing Utah valley a number of years in the state legislature, and, together with Jesse Knight, made financially possible the building and continuance of the B. Y. A. (now the B. Y.
