Show H Imperealisam B i. 1 H Imperialism is now established H in north Carolina, The vote that H was cast the other day by the party H that is matting a big cry Against B imperialism being established in H the Phillipine Islands established H that system. The anti-negro con- H stitutional amendment it is reported B was carried by 25,000 thousand B majority. The avowed object of B the amendment is to disfranchise B the negros of that state because B the poor darkies don't cast their B vote for the party that opposed B their freedom. Everything pos- B ible seems to have been done to B intimidate the negros to keep them B from registering and by this means B thousands were prevented from B voting. Under a fair and free B legal ballot the amendment would B probably have met defeat. In point B of fact the negroes prevented B from voting were doubtless strong B tnough numerically to secure the HB rejection of the amendment. The H fusionists did not encourage thorn B to resist, for had they done so a H most calamitous and sanguinary H race .war would have ensued. No B fewer than forty counties in the H eastern part of the state were vir- H tually abandoned by the fusion B forces. H The North Carolina party that H has brought this state of affairs H about has reaffirmed the Decla-H Decla-H ration of Independence for the nl-H nl-H leged benefit of the Filipinos. It H should be made to reaffirm it for H application at home I The sound-H. sound-H. est constitutional lawyers have rie-H rie-H clared the "grandfather clause" a H violation of the spirit and letter of B the fifteenth amendment, and the H- Supreme Court should make short H work of it. H The North Carolina suffrage B amendment may yet become the m paramount iisne in the presidential president-ial ial campaign. |
