A destnio-tlvo destnio-tlvo cyclono struck this town at 0:20 o'clock Thursday night. A path of quarter a milo wldo and as clean as the pralrlo was swept through the eastern portion of the city, and 400 buildings, homes and mercantile houses woro leveled to tho ground In scattered ruins. In the heavy rain that followed, tho peoplo who had escaped turned out to rescue tho Injured. For two hours not much was accomplished, as all was confusion, but by eight o'clock forty-nine forty-nine dead bodies had been taken from tho ruins. It Is confidently expected that the list ot dead will reach between fifty and sixty, if not to exceed that. Almost Al-most u thousand people wero moro or less Injured. Intense darkness prevailed after tho cyclone, and tho rescuers were at a disadvantage dis-advantage for a short tlmo until fire broko out In a dozen places In tho rulni and shed light over tho scene. No attempts at-tempts wero made to extinguish the fires, partly because the rescuers had no time, and partly because of tho need of light. On both sides of tho storm's path tho debris was piled high and burned fiercely. In nil probability a number of bodies have been incinerated. |
