The Hanford atomic reactor plants are the safest working places in the world, according to records. Unprotected, a man could not safely come within a quarter of a mile of such nuclear chain reaction as takes place in a Hanford pile. Yet no worker at Hanford has gotten in an entire year as much radioactivity as having your chest Thick concrete walls furnish most of the protection but there are jobs in which workers walk right into the rays. For instance, men with periscopes, magnifying lenses and powerful lights detected a piece of apparatus out of order. A remote control crane lifted it over a wall to an area free from rays. But the piece itself was emitting powerful gamma rays. Safety Fence Put Up A crew taped paper on the floor where the piece was to rest to save the floor from getting radioactive. The distance the rays would travel from the apparatus was calculated, and a safety fence set up at the limits of danger. The piece had to be repaired. First a crew trained on an identical piece of apparatus, to save time when they came to the hot apd. Michael V. PRICE DIRECTOR SALMON CASSEROLE By Marguerite Mickelsen A Lenten entree with high food interest is this casserole of salmon, combined with toast. The smooth texture of the creamed fish and the toast combine to produce crispness and piquancy of the lemon-butte- r a dish with both flavor and texture contrast. Either steamed haddock or cod may be used in place of the salmon. This dish is inexpensive, of good quality in minerals and in proteins. SALMON CASSEROLE 2 tablespoons butter or margarine 2 tablespoons flour Vt teaspoon salt 2 cups milk 1 1 1 (No. 1) can salmon and juice cup fine dry bread crumbs tablespoon finely chopped parsley Melt butter in a saucepan. Blend in flour and salt. Add milk and cook until thick, stirring constantly. Bone and flake salmon. Combine salmon, salmon liquid, dry bread crumbs, parsley, onion, celery horse-radismustard, pepper and chopped eggs. Fold salmon mixture into white sauce. Spoon mixture into 6 greased individual casseroles, or into a greased lVfe quart casserole. Bake in a moderate oven (350F.) for thirty minutes for individual casseroles or for fifty minutes for large casserole. Yield: 6 servings. h, LEMON BUTTER TOAST 6 tablespoons soft butter IV2 teaspoons grated lemon find or margarine 12 slices enriched bread 2 teaspoons lemon juice Combine butter, lemon juice and lemon rind. Toast sliced bread on one side. Spread lemon butter on untoasted side of bread slice. Cut each slice in half. Place bread, spread side up, on an ungreased cookie sheet. Toast under a preheated broiler (400F.) for five minutes until golden brown. Serve with fish entrees or salads. Yield: 12 servings 1 slice toast per serving. By that time every mans clothes were presumed to be covered with radioactive atoms. The crew went to a room where they stripped these clothes, washed and had their skin tested for radioactivity. Some had radioactivity on their hands, the parts which had been closest to the hot apparatus. These had to scrub several times with special green soap and other chemicals. The amount of radioactivity permitted these workers is less than the natural radioactivity which everyone gets from the air at one mile altitude. Dust and air might get radioactive in the Hanford plants, and for this robot monitors detect the contamination long before it is dangerous. The robots blow whistles, ring bells and flash lights in warning. Ey. FRENCH PORK BIRDS 1 teaspoon salt teaspoon pepper 4 teaspoon ground marjoram Va 6 or sage lean pork shoulder steaks, Va" thick V2 Va 1 V2 Va Va cup finely chopped carrots cup finely chopped onion egg, beaten teaspoon salt teaspoon pepper cup hot bouillon or milk Va cup flour slices bacon, chopped 1 cup cider V2 " bread cubes toasted cups Combine salt, pepper and marjoram. Sprinkle over pork steaks. Fry bacon until crisp. Place bacon and drippings in a mixing bowl, reserving 2 tablespoons drippings for browning meat. Add toasted bread cubes, carrots, onion, beaten egg, salt and pepper. Add bouillon and mix well. Spread stuffing on pork steaks, roll up and tie with string. Roll in flour and brown birds in bacon drippings. Place pork birds into a IV2 quart casserole. Add cider. Cover and bake in a hours. (If desired, moderate oven (350F.) for one and one-ha- lf onions small and small carrots may be placed in caspeeled scraped minutes before pork birds are done). To serve: serole forty-fiv- e remove strings, place pork birds on a platter and pour a little of the gravy from the casserole over them. Thicken gravy if desired.
