Frequently, nothing! Homemakers need a room of their own, a sort of private retreat where they can follow their hobbies, home management or entertain a guest or two Just as much as anyone else In the family. In many housea this is a very real possibility, too, if space Is utilized .properly. So many houses have small which may be used as a .spare guest room, or as a sort of a den,or as a catch-al- l for things that really could go Into the attic or basement Since these rooms are so small, few have thought of putting them into real, busy use. The room I have In mind can be as small as 8'x8', When all the space la carefully and fully used, this can be converted into a room of her own for .the lady of the house who not only so much deserves it but also needs it. Here she can do her marketing If theres a telephone at hand; here she can catch up on letter store one or two folding chairs that you want handy in case of entertaining. Use Decorations To Reflect Personality In a room of her own, etchj homemaker has a real opportunity to reflect her own personality ef-- ; fectively. The room can be gay, smart, subdued but charming, with bright or brilliant colors. If the room is small, take it easy on pattern since too much decoration will make it seem too full and crowded looking. With a little more space, you can use some pattern, if this is wisely done. A picture or two, your favorites, of course, may be used on the; walls, but too many of these will only add clutter. Much of what is used depends upon the propor--' tions of the room. With lots of natural light, you need but few lamps. If the room is on the shady side of the house, and you lack space for lamps, use the pin-utypes on the walls as they will be Have at least one comfortable chair in the room, as you will do much of your work in it Other chairs, may be added as space and necessity dictate, but when space is lacking, store folding chairs in the closet t The beauty of the fragile des- ert rose, that all too briefly blooms in the Mojave desert, has been captured for permanent enjoyment in all its lovely colors under the durable glaze of this California earthenware. These may be made into drawers, if desired, but at any rate have the sections which can be used for spools of thread, needles and pins, fasteners, trimmings, tape measure, scissors, pinking shears, patterns, sewing books, remnants to use in mending or quilting as well as sewing machine attachments. If you do not feel that you have room for an ironing board in the closet, perhaps you'll want to place a in the closet. Another possibility is a board that can be used for pressing and cutting. For the latter purpose you should have a board that is at least 27 wide and 60" long. Now available are card tables e which all fold into a small writing; here she'll sew either alone or with her friends; or here she can retreat to listen to her favorite program or read a book while the youngsters entertain their friends in the living room or while Dad has his evening fun fest with the youngsters before they go to bed. In reality, the room can be to the homemaker an office such as many have from which they direct their activities. Select Keen With Closet One feature which the room absolutely needs is a closet especially if it is to serve a variety of uses. This need not be large, for one which is 21 inches deep will hold all that it needs in the way of sewing aids. The closet will serve its purpose first of all if it has double mirrors, one mounted on front of the center door and one on the back of the closet door. These will be invaluable in helping you to fit clothing And enitrUiuing guests. properly when you're sewing, Also in the closet youll have which would also be handy for the i space for a dress form which is so room. It is no secret that you should lave a good cut of meat with which :o start, if you want to have a cut to set on the table. But Mice you have a good cut, do cook t properly Instead of ruining it This latter statement may sound but every day i bit there are thousands of women who (o to a great deal of trouble finding a perfect roast, then cook it like a pot roast which is practically itewing it Then, too, there are other thousands who lose pounds of meat by using methods such as high temperature for browning" the meat. This is because meat not necessary cooked at constant low tempera ture will brown enough to be attractive to the most discerning eye, and will not shrink and lose juice as well as waste meat If you have a covered roaster, resolve right now to discard the cover and invest In a rack for a roast A true roast is not at any point during roasting, cooked with a cover. It should sit on a rack, fat side up, at low to moderate temperature in the oven, to roast per' fectly. How long should a roast be cooked? The most accurate way of determining this is to insert a meat thermometer into the meat as you place it in the oven, and when the temperature has reached its proper point the roast is done. Insert the thermometer through the center, as deep into the meat as possible. You may figure out the time to roast by pounds, but this is not nearly so accurate, especially if you are cooking roast beef to medium rare. de-icio- us ' A high fashion theme that will add smartness and versatility to ever so many dresses, come Antonin, Is the dress and Jacket combination.
