LAYTON, DAVIS COUNTY, UTAH ircBcBaQciDnnn KkBWBEr Dnaim A EFflDnCtnEin When things get tough, how often we have said, Oh, to be a child a mother and dad to make all the deciagain! No responsibilities sions and tell us what to do! We shouldnt like it for long, though! We wouldnt be happy as children, being told when to get up and when to go to bed, being punished for our own good for talking back. No sir! Today as adults, independence is far more important to us than parental love and discipline could ever be. In a word, we have grown up. None of us, as individuals, would surrender for a minute our grownup independence. But sometimes, collectively, as citizens e may feel that the world has become too complex for us. At such times, that magic word Security looks awfully good. At such times there is a big temptation to lean on Daddy on someone bigger than we are in this case. Government. We feel inclined to say to Government: Here, you take care of us; e want Security. We will surrender our Independence just a little teeny bit of it for Security. Of course, as other countries have found out, we cant surrender In this world of nations you just a little teeny bit of our Independence! Your child. Government is either your a are or are either grown up you a kind boss at first, but be boss! It is it or servant may hired your ... r m I r 7 . EOais DOdDircE CDDnaumccs there is never any guarantee, human beings being what they are, that it may not be a very severe boss later on when it is too late to do anything about it! There is very little danger that America will ever be conquered by an outside foe, that Americans will ever be subjected to tyranny from outside their borders. Our big danger is that we will trade our Independence for promises of Security which, even if given in good faith, are often beyond the capabilities of human governments to perform. We need only look at foreign lands to see tragic proof. Worst of all, under such a system of authoritarianism there would be no incentive left for those individuals with courage who still wish to get ahead by their own efforts, who still want to build a career for themselves and a future for their country. We should all live a life that, at best, would be that of a pet house dog, a life devoid of dignity, and at its worst, no better than a concentration camp. Courage, a sense of Maturity, a vibrant Eagerness to meet the great challenges of our time unafraid these are the birthright of every American. These, indeed, are our American heritage. |
