A widow with a family of small children, went to the captain and asked tor the loan of a team. This was refused and the widow was informed that only families with men at their heads were desired in that company. Feeling hurt at the treatment she had received, the widow said, “I will beat you to the valley and I will ask no aid from you.” Her little son Joseph stood holding to her skirt. At his mother’s reply to the captain, he was astonished, and wondered how yet in his heart he believed her words would come true. this could be, | About two months after they started one of her oxen became sick. Joseph knew if it died they could not reach the valley. His mother had the elders anoint they could go it with oil, and pray on, and the ox stood up that it might and began be healed so that to pull. When near the little mountain they rested, and when the order for the start was made the widow’s oxen were missing. They hunted everywhere but in vain. The captain told her that he knew she would only be a burden and ordered the company to move on. While some of the party were out looking for the lost oxen they met a man and asked him if he had seen any. He said he had and pointed in a certain direction. ~ They went the opposite way and found them with their heads tied down in the bushes. When they overtook the company, they found everything in confusion. On reaching the top of the mountain a terrible storm had come and the captain to ordered them to turn their animals loose and wait for the storm stop. When it was over their animals had wandered away, .and when the widow and her family reached them, they were unable to continue their journey that night. | Driving on she entered the valley, and next day sent her team and wagon back to meet the company and assist them in. Thus she fulfilled her vow: and another testimony was given to her little son, that there is a God in heaven who hears and answers the prayers of the faithful. —Donette Kesler, ’22.
