Show 2B Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, September 19, 1984 After 1 8 Years of Going Their Separate Ways Reunited Friends Win Tourney LAYTON It was 18 years ago the now Brigham City golf pro Reid Goodliffe teamed up with childhood friend John Evans, currently a pro at Cedar Ridge, to capture their third straight Spanish Fork best-ba- ll amateur golf tournament. Saturday, after an interim of going their own ways in the pro ranks, the two teamed again and found they still had a magic combination as they beat out another pair of golfers in sudden death in ll the Utah State Open Championship. Goodliffe and Evans, who led the field by a single stroke after Fridays second round, Saturday fired a respectable . Best-Ba- " 66. But Wolf Creek pro Joel Kranz and University of Utah assistant pro teamed for a blistering 62 to tie at the end of regulation play for the tournaments professional flight at Laytons Valley View golf course. In the playoff the two teams halved the first hole with pars. On No. 2, a short par five, the g Goodliffe reached the green in two and left his eagle putt near the hole for an easy, lCLun-der-p- ar long-hittin- tapin birdie. Bybee also reached the green in two while his partner was off behind the green in the weeds and out of the hole. Bybee, however, missed both his eagle and birdie putts, giving Goodliffe and Evans the $1,800 winners purse to split. Bybee and Kranz settled for $1,300 to split as the runners up. Goodliffe said he enjoyed the playoff because he is not only old friends with Evans but also with Bybee and Kranz, who both grew up playing on the Brigham City golf course. It was fun because theyre both from Brigham City. Joel and Doug have grown up with me out there at the golf course and we are really close friends, Goodliffe said. Going into the final round Goodliffe said he thought he and Evans would be safe with a 66. I would have liked to have shot a 64 or 63, and we both played well but we just didnt team as well. We had four birdies where we doubled up, he said. The two previous days, spent on the Davis Park Course and the Bountiful City course, on Thursday and Friday, the pair of Goodliffe and Evans did team well. Evans made three big pars while Goodliffe was struggling in the rough. Both golfers saved each other with pressure birdie shots when his companion was in trouble. d leaders Sonny Braun and Kean Ridd scored a three-ovpar 72 Friday to take them out of contention for the lead after the second round. Jerry Outzen and Joe Cornwall finished with a 64 Saturday to capture third place, while Davis Park pro Pierre Hualde and assistant pro Brak Stone tied for fourth place at par with Scott Brandt and Henry White. The pros complimented the tournament in its first year. It was great, said Bybee. Hopefully Ill be playing here next year. Maybe .we can come back and do some damage. We OGDEN - The football coaches at Roy High School are rubbing their chins this week in an effort to find the right combination that will restore the Royals to their winning ways in time for the Region one opener this Friday. The latest setback came last Fri7 day here in. the form of a n drubbing at the hands of rival Ogden. 7 The loss left Roy at 3 for the preseason schedule and looking ahead to host the Box Elder Bees this week in the first league clash. 7 We dont have the puzzle fighead ured out yet, said coach Fred Thompson, but were getting closer. We will have to make some changes to get ready for the region. One bright spot has been the defense, especially against the run. Id say that the strength of .the team has been our defense against the run, Thompson said. , Our defense has played well and kept us in some games. We lqst 24-- 8 against Bountiful, but the score was not really indicative of how we played. 31-- cross-tow- 0-- first-ye- ar ,'' REID GOODLIFFE a fairway iron, Mack Christensen and his teammate were near the leaders after the initial tournament round. One consolation is that we have played good preseason competition so I feel better prepared for region. Id be a lot more concerned if we we were 3 after playing teams that arent very good. The Royals have also been hurt by injuries. The most crucial being the broken foot of John Naisitt. We lost a linebacker, kicker and tailback in Qne person, said Thompson, and we have had to go on kind of a search and destroy mission in order find a replacement. He will be harder to replace on defense than offense but anytime you lose someone that fills that 0-- many positions it will hurt a lit- - tie-- The Royals must now regroup in a hurry to get ready for Box Elder. Still fresh on the minds of the coaches, at least, is the surprizing upset suffered last year in Brigham City in the Region opener. Thompson minimized the revenge factor of this years contest, however, stating that of 22 starters last season only one has returned. I spoke to the Bees coach last week and he was still talking about how he felt we overlooked his team last year, Thompson remarked.
