Back when we were young, we had Mr. Reynolds, a cunning old man who shared my brothers room. Although Reynolds stayed in the closet most of the time, he came out mischievously when no one was looking, to do things like empty the sand out of his sneakers all over the bathroom floor or cut a hefty slice out of the chocolate cake Mom had frosted for new neighbors moving in. Besides cake, Mr. Reynolds was par- ticularly fond of cookies. No matter how often Mother baked, there were never enough for the family with Mr. Reynolds in the house. Dr. Bruce H. Woolley says sophisticated data have shown that many generics are equal to brand-nam- e products. However, data also show that many generics do not provide adequate therapeutic results. The drug expert says he found while serving on the Drug Specifications Committee for Los Angeles County that a generic brand of diphenhydramine (an antihistamine for allergies) caused nausea and vomiting in a large number of patients. An investigation showed that one of the ingredients used in the manufacturing process caused the nausea. Woolley says bioavailability measurements, which determine how quickly and how much of a drug reaches the site where its needed, show deficiencies in some generic drugs. A graph can be plotted showing the concentration of the drug in the blood We always knew when Reynolds had raided the ice box, because, like my brother, he liked ketchup on his midnight snacks. This disease is most common between the months of October and March, and it attacks children under the age of four and often under the age of two. The symptoms include a high fever, around 100 to 106 degrees. The fever comes on quickly, Lockhart says, sometimes within a few hours. The child has a sudden and rapid swelling of the soft tissue above the vocal cords and unless immediate treatment is received, these tissues could close off the childs air supply, he warned. The child may exhibit other symptoms such as intense crying, moaning and difficulty in breathing. There is a classic position these patients exhibit, commented Lockhart. The sit forward and rock, drool and struggle to breathe. Lockhart says sometimes a tracheotomy, a surgical opening of the trachea to facilitate ventilation, is necessary. Antibiotics are effective in treatment of this illness, and hospitalization is usually required, he said. Along with antibiotics the child is often given intravenous medication and is kept under close observation, Lockhart stated. The croup caused by a virus is not as dangerous immediately but it is harder to treat, he explained. There is no vaccine available for viral croup, he said. Antibiotics are not effective against viral croup since the virus causing the croup is the same type associated with the common cold, Lockhart noted. Antibiotics are useful in viral croups only if an upper respiratory infection goes along with the illness, he said. The disease is not as common after early winter, he added. A doctor should be notified when symptoms appear, Lockhart said. Warm or cool mists may be recom colony of ants into the house, leaving them in an open box on the linen closet shelf. When the box itself, disappeared a few days later. Mother suggested that maybe Mr. Reynolds had reclaimed it. Apparently, he didnt take the ants too, because we found them, one by one, in the most disconcerting places. Even after Mr. Reynolds finally left our home, he often came back to visit. Croup is a disease, according to Mark Lockhart of McKay-De- e Hospital Center, which attacks infants and children and can generally be diagnosed as viral or bacterial in origin. Lockhart is a registered respiratory therapist and is supervisor of the prenatal and pediatric respiratory unit at McKay-De- e Hospital. Croup has a definite season when it is most likely to be contracted, he said. It is generally contracted through infected family members or persons whom come in le If there was a window with a broken screen, Mr. Reynolds always left it open mendations: tions of the es Without Mr. Reynolds around, thered be no one thoughtless enough to track gooshy mud across the living during rainstorms. One thing I would like to advise is that parents who smoke do not do so around children with croup. The smoke in the air can be very harmful when breathed by the sick child, he said. To avoid the illness Lockhart advised , family members to practice good basic hygiene. Wash hands often and keep the mouth covered when coughing, he said. These diseases are often carried on hands, he said, although they can be contracted through the air.
