Staff Photos by Robert Regan Mrs. Tateoka now judges on the highest level, Olympic and World Championships, and is proud of this accomplishment. With characteristic modesty she notes that she will be the only Utah judge at the Olympics. Last year, the USA finished within the first three or four places in each of the events and, by so doing, can now send a judge for every event. Mrs. Tateoka has been involved with the Utah Figure Skating Club since before the Club moved to Bountiful in n 1974 and is a and respected figure in the Utah skating world. But how does international judging combine with her family of a husband and two children? I waited until my children were grown, Mrs. Tateoka explains. My daughter loves skating, she competed for twelve years. My son does not skate at all, judge Ida Tateoka sigearned nals marks Dy a skater duling the figure compulsory competition at the Bountiful Recreation Center Jan. ICE SKATING to be available to her family. Now, however, she concedes she is extremely busy. This is my first time judging Olympics, so it is all new for me. When asked about the, differences in amateur status" between the Eastern Block skaters and those of the Western world, Mrs. Tateoka answered, The USFSA tries to help the U. They also have fund raisers to aid skaters, but still they cannot do as much as the USSR and other East Block countries do to finance skaters. she said. The skaters resent the unfair competition sometimes, Mrs. Tateoka agreed, but she noted, Our skaters rise to the same or better levels on their own, without excessive help from their country. They do sometimes have sponsors, but only through the approved channels, via the USFSA, which makes sure the Olympic Committee approves as well, she said. The problem of style is another issue for a judge: often a judge has to guard against prejudice. He or she is often so used to the American style of skating that the European one seems odd. Hence, the grades may be in favor of the nationality of the judge. This is a difficult point to eradicate, but we all try to be as fair as possible. Mrs. Tateoka is much sought- after by the press these days: Skating Magazine ran a story on her in its December issue, Salt Lakes Channel 4 interviewed her on Tuesday, Jan. 10, among others. But Bountifuls Olympic Judge remains stoic and mative under this barrage of pa' parazzi. Is she anxious about Serajevo? I hope the terrorist will not pick us as a target, and I will try to do the best I can, while being as fair as I can. . Continued from page IB. theres all this electricity around you. I started thinking wed lost our minds, said Elizabeth , Rodkey Faust states it more simply. Mom was scared. I was It was radical. Clad in a regulation orange, swimming cap and black trunks, Faust plunged into the Pacific Ocean with hundreds of other entrants. He finished the triathlon on foot, 17 hours, 28 minutes and 39 seconds later. The last two miles a bunch-o- f my friends were following me yelling, Way to go, said Faust. Also following him were cameras from ABCs Wide World of Sports which have highlighted him the. last two years as the youngest participant. When asked by a friend if he would compete again, Faust said, Man, youre nuts. For a week after the event, his legs were so sore, he had to use his arms to climb stairs. But within a short time, Faust changed his mind and decided to enter the next triathlon, only six months after his first competition due to a change in dates. His most recent effort, last October, posed the greatest challenges he has encountered in competition, but he still man- age(j t0 finish in 14 hours, 35 minutes, and 6.3 seconds. An jured knee, 53 mile per hour winds and an ocean whirlpool slowed Fausts time, but didnt stop him. I got stuck in a whirlpool and swam in the same place for 1 5 minutes," said Faust. After finally emerging from the water with his neck battered by slashing salt water, Faust was faced with winds so strong they blew his bicycle sideways. Then his knee, that had been hurt in training, started to swell. I taped it as tight as I could and kept going. This competition means business. You dont quit. What is the source of his exceptional motivation and discipline? It is a mystery to him. Typically modest, he says he just likes to finish what he starts. Aside from exceptional mental descipline, which is considered by some to be a major factor in "t dllKlTt Ul' Ui 'id' Uo u ,itu ii u utr i ,iih i I 111 in i lie determining success or failure in the triathlon, Faust had an added advantage.
