Show Hi 10A Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, November 14, 1984 Lamanite Generation Sets Performance WOODS CROSS From the gentle swaying of a grass skirt in the south Pacific to the intricate footwork of a Senor in Latin America, the fascination and tradition of many ancient cultures wil burst into song, dance and colorful costumes as the Lamanite Generation from Brigham Young University invites you to Go to Rio," clap the Samoan Slap Dance" or witness an American Indian Fancy Dance" during its performance Mon. Nov. 26. at 7.30 p.m. in Woods Cross High School auditorium. Lamanite is a Mormon term used for American Indians and other groups. The student performing group representing nearly 20 different Latin American, Polynesian and American Indian cultures will present a showcase of their cultural heritage in a musical extravaganza. Audiences will watch as dancers balance lighted candles on their head during the dramatic Latin number La te full-skirt- Bruja." or as American Indian performers wind 22 hoops around feather and fringe in the complex Indian Hoop Dance, forming birds, flowers and other symbolic shapes as they keep a constant jump-ste- p rhythm. Polynesians will open the gates of paradise as they perform the graceful dances and ballads of Hawaii and demonstrate various Hawaiian rhythmical instruments. They will take you to the magical isle of New Zealand where Maoris swing their poi balls in formations that portray the sounds of fluttering wings of birds and butterflies. More than 40,000 people throughout England, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Denmark experienced their unique brand of entertainment during the summer of 1984. The Lamanite Generation performed at the largest Fourth of July celebration outside the U.S. This performance is sponsored by the Bountiful Rotary.
