Show Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, November 14, 1984 4A At Temple Square Stewart Art Work Shown SALT LAKE CITY : At 93 years old, Utah artist LeConte Stewart jumps into his pickup truck each morning to find a place in the countryside to paint. ' He's been doing if for decades, as his legacy of more than 4,000 paintings attests. About 200 of those paintings will be featured in a retrospective of Stewart's work to be held Nov. 19 to April 20, at the new Museum of Church History and Art in , downtown Salt Lake City, across the street west from Temple Square. More than 100 of the paintings will be exhibited for the' first time, selected from collections throughout the Western states. Stewart is best known for his landscapes and human interest , paintings portraying life in Utah. His paintings of Utah life during the great depression are known zine. Since his wifes death in the spring of 1984, Stewart has been painting even more. He recently renewed his drivers license, and travels the country close to his home where he paints the Utah nationally. For 8 years Stewart was chairman of the art department at the University of Utah. After school and on weekends hed travel to 1 ' he loves. nearby canyons to paint Utah landscapes. He would paint the desert, the rural countryside, and old houses and vacated buildings. A quiet man, Stewart has never actively promoted himself or his art, and in fact has never paid much attention to selling it. His wife had a small gift shop m Kaysville, Utah, where she would sell his paintings, which eventually made their way into collections throughout the western states and into American Heritage maga The Museum of Church Histo- ry and Art is located at 45 N. West Temple Street. Catalogs, posters, art prints and post cards are available at the museum store, and films and orientation about the museum and exhibits are available in the museum theatre. The museum is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends. The museum is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Day, and starts Friday, 9:30 a.m. be sizes Easter. Bahais Plan Family Lecture BOUNTIFUL Family Life: Basis for Civilization will be the subject of an informal talk by Dr. Peter Haug sponsored by the Bahai community of Bountiful at the home of Nelson and Doris Valkeri LeDuc, 156 W. 200 S., Bountiful. The talk will begin at 8 p.m.. Wed., Nov. 14. Haug, a systems ecologist, resided in Tumwater, Washington. He holds an masters in wildlife ecology and a Ph.D in systems ecology, both from Colorado State University. He will discuss the importance of marriage and family in maintaining a stable so ciety from the perspective offered by the Bahai Faith. A Bahai since 1965, Haug has, with his wife, taught at numerous Bahai schools in Colorado, Florida, South Carolina, and Virginia, After graduating from Hamilton College as an English literature major, Haug worked for five years as a journalist, editor, and public relations writer before our Layton store in switching fields. and has spoken on the Bahai Faith across the United States from Florida to Alaska. He has also served in various elected and appointed administrative posts in the Bahai Faith. He has taught college, worked as a private environmental consultant, and currently works for the Bureau of Land management of the U. S. Department of the Interior. According to church officials the three fundamental tenets of the Bahai Faith are the oneness of God, the essential oneness of all major religions, and the unity of mankind.
