This financial risk with intolerable legal fees and insurance costs caused Wyeth Laboratories, a major manufacturer of the vaccine, to cease production this past spring. Shortages of the vaccine did occur in several states, including Utah. We were unable to obtian any DPT vaccine for approximately a period this past summer. One producer has ind creased his vaccine price this past year because of the legal costs involved. There has been concern that our public would drive another pharmaceutical agent off the market just the way Bendectin was a year or two ago. Only in the case of pertussus vaccine, the cost of no vaccine being available would be far greater than that of the loss due to Bendectin being taken off the market. ' But enough editorializing. What can you do to minimize the risk of this vaccination? These are the consensus contraindications to pertussis vaccine use (conditions under which the vaccine should not be used): 1. The presence of an acute illness with fever. 2. Hypersensitivity (similar to allergy) to the ommuniiy dueatioin Classes melt- 2 eggs ounce package Rinse one cranberries under running water. This is the D of the DPT shot given to babies and youngsters before they reach 5 or 6 years of age. There have been serious reactions to pertussis vaccine, but they are very rare. Organized opposition to the vaccination program has occurred in the United States since 1982. In the mid 1970s, such opposition caused a reduction in vaccination programs in Japan and the United Kingdom; in both countries the disease has in nearly epidemic proportions. James T. Cherry, chief of the division of pediatric infectious diseases at UCLA School of Medicine, estimates that if Americans stopped immunizing infants and children against pertussis, about two million American children would develop whooping cough within a decade. He estimates there would be 800 deaths each year and perhaps 80,000 would require hospitalization. At the present time, the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta reports that during the decade from 1973 through 1983, five to 10 deaths each year were attributed to pertussis and 1,500 to 2,000 cases were reported in total. Most infectious disease experts support the continuation of the immunization program for whooping cough and feel that its termination would result in epidemics of whooping cough, with much more sickness and death from the illness itself than from the vaccine. No doubt, some of the opposition has been well intentioned.
