Ironically though, being attacked by those l;its ' who claim to be religious. u An amendment which ;would allow prayer in public ' schools has been again been proposed by President Reagan. His bill, which was sent to the Senate, would have each school district write a prayer which would be repeated in the schools. n Senators Jake Gam and Hatch favor prayer in school. Gam is a of Reagans proposal and Hatch is sponsoring a medication bill, hoping it will 7 have a better chance of pasOr-ri- sage. Proponents claim the amendment, which would overturn the 1963 Supreme , Court ban on school prayer, would cure many of the problems found in society by miraculously instilling a new morality in our youth. Such a claim is escapism. Its all too easy to lind simple solutions for the ills which we suffer. Years ago, quacks sold copper bracelets to arthritis sufferers. The metal was supposed to sooth aching limbs. It was so simple, all you had to do was put it on. A few years ago in Utah, a man claimed if you got on his trampoline and jumped up and down while, repeating the named of the diseased part of the body, the illness would dry up. Even cancer was supposed to flee with the bouncing cure. At the turn of the century, many doctors traveled the country with their amazing health producing, cancer busting, constipation reliefing elixirs. All of these cures were very simple. None of them worked. Now spiritual quacks are trying to convince the public that prayer in school will rid The purchase of a ham radio set to ink Kaysville emergency preparedness officials with the Davis County Emergency Operations Center is a step toward coordination of disaster relief that all cities in the county would do well to copy. A primary weakness in emergency preparedness in Davis County and other areas of the state is communication. That fact became appar- of social ills. Not that theres anything bad with prayer. To many, its a real source of strength. But having public prayer in a state supported school, where children of many beliefs attend, will only add tension to a child who is trying to learn. The proponents of the say prayer amendment praying will be voluntary, that anyone who wishes can be excused. But the peer pressure will be great for the child who is told by his parents not to participate with the other children when they pray. Think of the Jewish child who may be alienated by his friends because he doesnt believe the way they do. Feel for the Buddhist, the Muslim, the agnostic or atheist child. Why add to their social alienation in school? And why place the burden of religious upbringing on the backs of the teachers? I also agree that there is a very large number of children that are not wanted, that are abused. But consider teaching your children that if a pregnancy does occur, not to take an innocent life, but to give up this baby to some couple who really wants one, or for some reason cannot children. The founding fathers were inspired when they made the division between church and state. It is emotional and dogmatic people who want their brand of religion forced upon tender children. Dont be misled by spiritual charlatans who tell you that prayer in school will bring mana of goodness from heaven. It will only bring many children discomfort and rejection. A good man once said that praying to be seen of men had little to do with being righteous. He said the private supplication is more potent.
