Show 8A Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, August 29, 1984 DeBER Show Your Flowers At Utah State Fair Utah gardeners have an opportunity to show off their green thumbs and share some of those gorgeous flowers growing in their back yard with fairgoers. Silver-bell- s and cockleshells-eve- ry type of flower will be judged at this Utah State Fair years best-evSept. 7 to 22, 1984. Glenna H. Leavitt, floriculture supervisor at the fair for several years, has offered to give advice to people who have never entered flowers in competition. Nearly everyone grows flowers, Ms. Leavitt says. Bring your best flowers and enjoy the fun and competition. She urges those who enter the flower show to harden their flowers by picking them late in the evening or early morning hours while the moisture is still in the st?m, then plunging them in warm water up to the flowers heads immediately after cutting, then storing them in a cool, draftless place. Flowers should normally be cut with long stems, just before they come into full bloom. Leaves that would be exhibited under water should be removed. ' A new trend in design this . er vear. according to Ms. Leavitt, is the big three, line, form and space. Space is as important as solids in design and can open up arrangements so the materials can be seen. Go for something strong and bold this year, Ms. Leavitt suggests "something that expresses your design. Gardeners may want to memorize principles of good design found in flower books so the information is at their fingertips while they are arranging flowers, Ms. Leavitt points out. Five flower shows will replace the traditional four at this years longer state fair. Flowers for all shows will be accepted at the Horiculture Building between 7 and 10 a.m. Entry dates are Sept. 8, 11, 14, 17, and NICCHPS Education department placed, ordefe in anticipation of previous year tales. State Now Recruiting For Potential Police As part of an ongoing program to recruit and select Utah peace officers, the State Department of Public Safetys Unified Law En- forcement Selection Service is encouraging potential police officers to apply now. The next testing date is Oct. 3, with tests being conducted in Salt Lake and in Richfield. Applications for the October test must 1 be received at the State Police Academy by Sept. 3. The selection service allows individuals interested in law enforcement careers to test at one location and satisfy applciation requirements for police agencies across the state. Applicants also benefit from the uniformity intrinsic to a single test program. ; At the completion of the testing, results are made available to any requesting Utah law enforcement agency. By using this list, an agency will be able to start with an applicant who has already demonstrated he or she has the capability to become a peace officer. The agency can go on from there with job interviews, work history or whatever additional selection criteria they desire in making a final selection. During the first year this ser-- ; vice was offered, 380 persons completed the test and approximately 65 were employed by 15 different police agencies. Hiring from the roster is an option available to police departments and is not a requirement in the selection of applicants. Applications can be obtained from most Utah law enforcement agencies or from the state police academy at 4525 South 2700 West, Salt Lake City.
