Show Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, April 11, 1984 University Data Second perhaps to the great mountains, rows of lombardy poplar trees are among the prominent features of the western landscape. Planted chiefly as windbreaks, the poplars were the pioneers first endeavors into community forestry. Since the days when making the desert blossom was important, community forestry has had an intermittent history. Many western cities and towns d have business and residential streets that were part of a forestry effort at one time or another. However, many new subdivisions and business areas resemble moonscapes. To help revitalize community forestry, Utah State. University has published a Community Forestry Manual and sent it to extension agents and local governments throughout Utah and southern Idaho. Community forestry is not a new program, says Larry The Community Forestry Manual is really a workbook that gives communities a process to follow. It includes taking inventory of current trees as well as the planting and maintenance needed, Wegkamp adds. The manual was written by members of USUs Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning Department with assistance from many professionals who work as community foresters. tree-line- Craig Johnson, one of the principal authors, says one thing in the manual that is really new is the idea of developing a mas With Community ter plan for community forests. We have compiled information from a variety of sources, Johnson says. Encouraging a master plan is one of the things that make the manual unique. Much of the other information in the book has been' done before." Such a plan provides continuity, of course, but it also takes ' into account the sizes of various trees, soil conditions and local values. It is far better to have an. : idea - about' what community: members want than to go about it hodge podge, be says. Plant-in- g can be done as funds become ed into the manual. During the beginning stages everyone interested should have a say. There is a section that discusses promotion and public education.
