Dr. Pritt uses as the text Talking Together, by Sherod Miller, et al. Initially, the 10 participants were nervous as they sat down in a circle and introduced themselves to the others. Dr. Pritt made it very clear to all present that his was not a therapy session but an educative experience. We are not here to perform group therapy, but to learn basic copimunication 'ENNY MEYERS Review Correspondent , Have you ever had the idea that you are not getting through , to your spouse? You are talking to a wall, and a not very receptive wall at that. 1 You are trying to discuss matters but the words wont come or they come out -- I backwards. You are frustrated, 'your spouse is getting impatient, a marital conflict is in the making. In order to remedy this sort of unnecessary strife, Dr. Thomas E. Pritt of the Bountiful Davis County Mental Health Center is teaching a course in couple communication for Bountiful resi--dent- The up eight-wee- in a k four-wee- k skills. He explained that tne course was not but In other words, the couples would have to learn how to talk. What to talk about is something they will decide in the privacy of their own homes. During the session, Dr. Pritt introduced the Awareness wheel, a tool which helps people to discern between sensations and feelings, thoughts and content-focusse- s. process-directe- course is split beginner sesadvanced sion and a four-wee- k course. The first class on how to communicate more effectively was taught Wednesday, Jan. 4. It follows a nationally recognized pro d, d. intentions, wishes and concrete plans. The participants were asked to carry out exercises which will help to clarify a conversation be' tween spouses. . . Coming sessions will deal with conversation and the conversation. say. you-direct- The me conversation explains to the spouse how one feels. The you, conversation is meant to make the spouse ex-, how heshe feels. plain One session will focus on light communication, whereas another will deal with heavy communication. In the first style, one talks in a pleasant or matter-of-famanner. In the heavy communication one threatens or blames the spouse for something. Also, participants are urged to see their responsibility to the spouse, to focus their intention, to be in touch with themselves so they can communicate more clearly what it is they wish to ct - . The final session of the first part of this course deals with the Youre concepts of Im OK. OK The second half of this course in Couple Compiunication will deal with problem solving techniques, as Dr. Pritt explains. Intimacy is a subject, as is the systematic broaching of potentially divisive and dangerous issues. Although this was only the first of the eight sessions, the reactions of the participants were unanimously positive. I was incredibly nervous when I arrived here, one participant said. I still am apprehensive about it all but I can see where this course is going to help us immensely in dealing with our problems.
