We are educated and informed people. We are loving and concerned parents. We dont take the lives of our children or the births of our babies lightly. More women are beginning to realize what a beautiful experience childbirth can be. There is a need for these women to have in attendance a person who knows how they feel in childbirth, someone who can empathize. An educated woman will search out a competent professional midwife. Ronna Hand and Linda Jellings are just that. They dont take chances with their mothers or babies, but they do it in a professional way with s' love. v Editorial Non-Vote- rs Its a national tragedy. Its an embarrassment. America, the land where democracy was first exercised, falls short of all othef democratic nations when it comes to the most basic freedom-voti- ng. In the last general election the United States had only 53.95 percent of its eligible voters go to the polls. In contrast to other national elections, England had 76 percent, France had 85 percent and West Germany had 87.8 percent. The U.S. Constitution may become a meaningless mass of words due to lazy Americans. Last month, Davis County had only 16 percent of its registered voters decide who Lose Rights would be given cil the chance to run for a coun- seat. The voters also approved a $12 million flood bond. Only 16 out of every hundred voters made that decision for the entire county. Theres no excuse. But there is one more chance for voters to go out and exercise their responsibility. Elections for many city seats will be decided on Nov. 8. If you dont vote, dont complain, dont petition your government for grievances and dont expect your rights to be unhampered. You gave up those rights when you stayed away from the polls. What are these doctors involved afraid of? There was no bloodshed. There never has been a cause for concern with these particular midwives! Are they afraid lay midwives might steal away their business? There is a definite need for doctors in hospitals. Many women are comfortable there. THATS whats important, but other women feel very different needs. There are some of us, men and women, who strongly believe that childbirth is not a medical procedure at least 90 percent or more of the time. And in that 10 percent, a competent childbirth attendant will screen out and send a woman in for a medical procedure. The best possible and most sensible thing to do would be to certify and license lay midwives. Let them be on the up and up. Allow them to carry lifesaving drugs like pitocin. If lay mid wives are not allowed to practice outright legally and safely, they will go underground and many pregnant women will follow them. Their record of 630 births in Utah and not one maternal or fetal fatality or any other sort of damage is hard to beat. And only 2 percent of these 630 women were transported. The fact that these women know when to transport and are alert to the signs of complications when they arise is a significant factor. Please consider the possibility of allowing these competent professionals to continue to practice in safety, and to be available to women who prefer a safe birth in the loving atmosphere of their home with the support and back-u- p of hospital and physicians. Margaret Stireman North Salt Lake Emotion High On Trapping Review Editor: In reply to a letter to the editor by Wayne Ross of Clearfield about trapping. Emotions when it concerns the life of any animal or human are very real for those who feel them. Few of your facts are real, if any. Forty million traps are set out continuously in the U.S. and Canada alone. The cruel, either jaggedtoothed or straight edge, traps can crunch an animals leg, leaving the victim to bleed, suffer and starve for days before the trapper comes to deal the final death blow. The animals are. so agonized that they often chew off their own feet and go off to die or, if the animal is a pet, try to drag it non-selecti- ve leg-ho- ld home. in Pennsylvania only last year. The cat had been missing several days when the cat came home with a trap embedded around its front leg. How he got that trap loose and then was able to make it home, well never know, but he did. The trap was removed and he was brought into the vets. Gangrene had set in and the leg had to be amputated. He survived but its not a sight Ill soon forget, the before or after. Mr. Ross says a trapper must learn about the animals he traps. If he learned so much, he must know that animals feet pain and fear and what kind of love for Gods creatures would subject them to unnecessary pain and fear caught in a trap? You mention traps that are set as not to catch unwanted animals. Do you honestly expect us to believe this, Mr. Ross? Is a warning sound emitted when the wrong animal approaches? Go away, we dont want you! Honestly Mr. Ross what kind of traps do you use, make believe? Just because we want to stop inhumane methods of hunting and trapping does not mean were against hunters that are rational, educated and most of all humane in their methods. You also say a trapper checks his traps twice a day. Well I believe this would depend on the number of traps he has out. Maybe you do but most trappers cover such a large amount of ground that they are able to check them only every few days leg-ho- ld I challenge you Wayne Ross. knowledge. know, I have seen just such a case when I worked for a vet I Mary Higgins Layton our familys continuing health care is MedFirsts continuing concern.
