Show 2B Lakeside Review North, Wednesday, Dec. 7, 1983 as Firefly Faces Unhappy (Editor's Noto: This Is Itio first InstoDmont Hirst-paChristmas story, dasionad to ba road aloud to chfidrsn.) SHARON NAUTA STEELE In a casting his feeble yellow light on the army ants comings and goings for most of his life. Having had the misfortune to break one antenna when he was just hatching, Frayedwick had blindly crawled out of his egg right into the jaws of a cruel army ant scavenger. The only life he had ever known was in dark caverns--flrthe egg, now the tunnel. The two prisoners often shared their thoughts with each other, though Mr. Frayedwicks patient attitude toward thier imprisonment was of little comfort to Jillinda. Of course, Philip, Ill be all ' right, said the melancholy firefly. I was just thinking about Christmas and the lovely time my family and I used to make of flitting in and out of the spruce and balsam boughs in Snowy Forest. What holidays we used to have there! Why only last year when I pleaded with Father for a pendant cut from crystal-ize- d dew, he went right out and sold his best lantern so that I could have my way. Another creature might have thought Jillinda rather selfish in her reheasal of how she came to acquire the dazzling jewel that sparkled on a chain around her neck, but the glowworm remained patient as ever. They say the dew crystal is magic, the firefly continued. A rt There was nothing festive about the Christmas Eve Jillinda Firefly was spending, shackled as she was to the vaulted ceiling of an army ant tunnel. She cried bitterly against the d ants who forced her to light the last loop of a passage that led to their Great Assembly Room, where just now their harsh laughter could be heard as they celebrated Dec, 24. Ever since Thanksgiving Day, when'Jillinda had made the mis--' take of flitting too close to an ant sentry who guarded the mouth of the fearful ant excavations, the tiny firefly had been forced to serve as a living torch for the underground colony. Now, during the waning hours of Christmas Eve, a few glistening grains of sugar dropped along the cavern floor by army workers on their way to the ration storage room reminded JiU linda that snow must be falling razor-jawe- 1 At the thought of not spending Christmas Day in Snowy Forest, Jillindas tears began anew. Be careful, or youll douse . , - your lantern, cautioned kindly Philip Frayedwick who flickered across the hall from Jillinda like a neon lamp. Mr. Frayedwick, a glowworm quite past his prime, had been short-circuit- ; crystal ball of sorts. But somehow, its never worked for me. Jillinda lowered her voice when a ruthless looking army soldier, one of the few on duty that evening, appeared, in a narrow bend of the tunnel. But it was too late. The dreaded Dominic Deleper had caught sight of the lustrous diadem as it reflected rainbows of light from Jillin- - das lantern. lindas neck. Many years later Jillinda i would remember the events that 1w he did easily for the , not-so-bra- soldier had fainted dead away. With Dominic thus disposed, Frayedwick picked up the only remaining fragment of dew crystal. He turned it over and over very close to his face, as though he hope to learn something from it. Then with a gentle little smile that looked out of place in his ugly face, he tucked the crystal in his vest pocket and reached for Jillindas hand. The crystal says we must seek out the enchanted May Fly who lies captive in the Ant Theater. We must find her before the clock strikes midnight. After that she will have passed beyond this life. The May Fly? Jillinda wondered. She had heard of the angelic May Fly, who sang beautiful sad songs by command of the Ant Queen. Only she has the vision to fully interpret the dew crystals message. But soon the army ants will leave their Christmas Eve revelry. And the May Fly grows weaker by the minute. Climb onto my back and we shall hurry to her side. Jillinda cringed at the thought .of accompanying Philip, grotesque as he now appeared, but somehow she forced herselt to execute his command. Next week: Jillinda and her friend make their way toward the magic May Fly. Dec. 9 Set for Rites ji LAYTON Verda Flint will celebrate her 80th birthday on Saturday, Dec. 10. With a lightning fast gesture, he snatched the jewel from Jil- Layton Resident To Note Birthday mmm followed, as if. they had been slowed down and frozen in time. by Dominic, caught his impulsive lunge, had reeled around twice with the necklace in his hand, before losing his grasp on the filigree chain. The momentum of his movement then carried the fragile ornament to the far side of the tunnel, where it exploded against the wall several inches below Mr Frayedwicks feet. As the strange mistlike vapors from the shattered dew crystal cleared, Jillinda could barely make out the stout figure of an ugly beetle who commenced to pulling at the chains that held him to the exact spot where Frayedwick had so long been fettered. Philip, is that you? Jillinda whispered. She had heard that glowworms could make such transformations, but still she trembled before the loathsome creature that wa.s succeeding firly well in his efforts to pull his leg irons from the wall. Yes, it is I, answered the' beetle in a voice that did indeed sound like Philips. The burly beetle had begun loosening the bands that for the past three weeks rubbed Jillindas wrists and ankles raw. As the astonished firefly watched, he proceeded to wrap irons and chains alike around Dominics arms and legs.
