Marily Barney began sewing in when she was 12 years old. When in high school she sewed for her sisters. There are six girls in our family and I made most of our clothes, she said. Because she was sewing for her sisters, her aunt later bought her a machine. As a child in second grade,. Mrs. Barney began to lose the muscle control in her left eye. It has gradually gotten worse until she can no longer move the eye. She now has double vision except when holding her head in a certain position. Four years ago she was diagnosed as having arthritis. With poor vision and pain in her hands she continues to sew. Sewing and doing handicrafts are good therapy, she said, I lose myself in my projects and forget that I hurt. Mrs. Barney recently created a wedding dress from a picture for a young bride. She often makes all of the dresses for a bridal party. Since the birth of her son Christian, she has found it easier to do handwork than to sew. Many hours are spent doing wheat weaving and counted cross stitch. The cross stitch pieces are framed insolid oak frames. I have made more than 300 of them, she stated. She also frames doilies and etchings which she sells in various boutiques. Some are now on display at the in Bountiful. Mrs. Barney holds her own holiday boutique, The Front e Porch twice a just before Mothers Day in the spring and again in the fall just before Thanksgiving. Many of the unique collections of handmade gifts done by her while the rest are consigned by approximately 40 other ladies.
