FARMINGTON The Davis County School District announced the hiring of a new director of vocational education, and also created a new position by naming an assistant. Walter E. Ulrich, who was an administrator in the states vo- Amsrmmmrjis nunmiEiusns cational education division from 1968 to 1982, will replace Clinton Zollinger, who will retire at the end of June. Superintendent Lawrence E. Welling said Ulrich has a vast background in finance and programs to bring to the district, and should help maintain the districts program, which Welling called one of the best vocational education programs in the state. Welling also asked the board to approve the appointment of Dean Christensen as Ulrichs assistant. We found two outstanding candidates, Welling told the board. Its difficult to draw a line and say you want one and not the other. Christensen has been a teacher in the Davis district for 17 years, according to Welling. The superintendent also said he felt obligated to explain the hiring of two men, instead of just one. He said vocational education programs are growing and the administration felt hir-- ; ing the two men would help meet that demand. Welling said there has been attrition in the vocational edu-- ! cation department and positions have not been filled. Funding for vocational education programs does not come from the weighted pupil unit the districts main source of said Welling, so the funding department is not competing for those dollars. Ulrich will assume his duties prior to Zollingers leaving, said Welling, which should make the change go smoothly. Ulrich, 56, is a graduate of Morgan High School and re- ceived a certificate of completion and graduated from Utah State University with a degree in industrial arts education. He received his masters degree from USU in the same field.
