Show Page 3A North Edition Lakeside Review Wednesday, February 6, 1985 Shop in Roy Offers Photo Finishing SHELLEY KANCITIS Review Correspondent ROY Say the word darkroom and most people picture a small, pitch black cubbyhole. Jeff Call, owner of Quick Image, photo proRoys new cessing shop, has a different view. His darkroom is a rectangular red box. When its time to develop film, Calls fingers do the walking. He enters the darkroom via two elbow length black sleeves and from then on, sees only by touch. After Call opens the film and loads it on a spindle, computers take over, making sure the film stays in each of eight baths for exactly the right length of time. The French made developer and darkroom unit is an example of technological advances that have streamlined the developing process, but have also created some misconceptions. The image people have is that because were fast, the picture is poor quality. Thats not true. We even offer custom work. If your film is overexposed, we can compensate for it during the printing process," said Jeff Call. Quick Image can develop discs and any other film that is C41 processed, a notation stated on film cannisters. This includes most color film and some brands of black and white. Slides and enlargements bigger than 5x7 are sent out. Film processed in the shop takes one hour to develop and print. Reprints are quicker with a waiting time of five to 10 minutes. I try to carry what people want. Whenever a customer comes in, I ask what theyd like to have me Stock, said Lynn Dee Hock, the shops owner. Mrs. Hock originally worked as a nurse. After I was widowed, I wanted to have a job with hours so I could be with my twins. . $ Opening a craft and gift shop deemed like the perfect solution. JVhen Mrs. Hocks sons are not jn school, they often are at the store helping vacuum and straighten merchandise. LynnDees Crafts also gives Mrs. Hock a chance to make her favorite hobby into a business. I come from a crafty family. From a young age we always had craft projects to work on. I did them instead of learning how to cook. I hate to cook. Running a business and single parenting two boys leaves little .time for kitchen work. Instead Mrs. Hock spends her days keep ing up with the latest craft trends. A popular item to make now is a fabric clock. Using fabric scraps, plexiglass for the face, and clock movements, you can make a color wall clock for a low price, said Mrs. Hock. LynnDees Crafts and Gifts has basic craft supplies such as embroidery thread, doll heads, pat- tern and instruction books, ribbon, macrame supplies, applique patterns that can be done on a sewing machine, and acrylic oil paints. AH gift items are hand made resulting from Mrs. Hocks decision to take crafts on consignment. She plans to offer classes given by experienced instructors. Im considering tole painting, wheat weaving and soft sculpture. It depends on what the public wants." And if Valentines Day is on your mind, Mrs. Hock can help out with a variety of items ranging from crocheted kewpie dolls to tiny styrofoam valentines. My wife and I went to school in California to learn how to operate the equipment, said Call. It was fairly easy for me because I had developed pictures before in high school classes and at home where we had a darkroom. Call said the hardest part comes during the printing process. You have to develop an eye for color so you can achieve the truest colors on the pnnts. To help ensure good tone, Call runs a test each morning on the strength of chemicals used in printing. They deteriorate in time so the test shows how I can compensate.
