Show Can Save Geraniums Over Winter Lakeside Review North, Wednesday, Nov. 9, 1983 No Big Hurry Have you taken your geraniums indoors to try to save them over winter? Some people try this without really satisfactory success. Often the problem results when they try, to save too much of the plant. Duane Hatch, Utah State University extension horticulturist, says all you should try to do is keep the roots and a small part of the stem alive. The plants ' with some soil still around the roots may be put in a pot or several in a box. These plants should be pruned severely. Inspect the geraniums occasionally and add waiter as needed. Keep 'them from drying out completely and avoid freezing. Keep them where they will remain near dormant in temperatures of the; high 40s or low 50s. Light is not essential. Though it is too late in most places this year, Hatch says a more satisfactory method for carrying over geraniums for the garden is to take puttings. In this process, you cut vigorous shoots 4 inches long and remove any of the flower buds. Expose the cuttings to the air for a day or two to dry enough to avoid rot, then put, them in a soil mix of half sand and half peat moss and avoid over watering. If you like to grow a lot of geraniums, Hatch says you can do so economically by growing your own from seed. Select improved kinds in the colors you want . from a garden catalog. Plant in at least 4 inch size pots to allow room to develop gocfd ' root systems, and avoid crowding the tops. Place the pots in a room with good light and growing condi-- , tions. With proper care, next spring they should be ready for transplanting to your garden. Utah State University extension specialists say that helps grass to store food in the roots for greater health and vigor. ..They caution, however, against allowing the grass to go into the winter with extra length. Long grass will flop over, mat down aftd be susceptible to snow mold disease. To avoid the disease and to make leaf raking easier, lower the mower blade to remove the extra thick top growth. Then raise the mower blade again for any subsequent cuttings. Also, to prevent snow molds, USU Extension Plant Patholo- -' gist Sherman Thomson, cautions against fertilizing heavily in the fall. That caution tempers the ' general recommendation to add fertilizer to the lawn in the fall or early spring. ' Thomson suggests applying a fungicide where snow mold has been a problem. Contact him or the local county extension agent for fungicide recommendations. He also advises effort, where snow mold has been a problems, to prevent the snow from building too deep. Place physical barriers to prevent drifting and remove heavy accumulations of ' snow, either physically or by . spreading white particles, such as soot or light ash to absorb the sun's rays and hasten melting. As another fall measure lawn damage, dont wait too long after leaves fall to get ' them off the lawn. Layers of - leaves lying too long on the lawn can weaken the grass.
