Show i t ,, JL if lakeside Review North, Wednesday, Mar, 23, 1983 According f0SfUJfr Utah Roads Safer Si nee 1948 Utahns are safer on the sates highways now than in 1948, according to the latest figures from the Utah Highway Patrol, A highway fatality number commonly used for comparison of areas with different populations is the number of fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles (100 MVM) traveled. Utahs 1982 total at 2,70 deaths per 100 MVM was the lowest ever recorded in Utah and compared with a record high of 9.36 in 1948. Highway Patrol officials said the death rate has dropped steadily since the 1948 high, but they were particularly pleased with the new figure. Highways are engineered for safety, cars are . being built with occupant protection in mind, and Utahns are becoming some of the nations best drivers, said Col. Dennis Nordfelt, superintendent of the Highway Patrol. Utahns are dying at less than half the rate of the 1950s and 60s. Neighboring states reported an average 5.53 deaths per 100 MVM during 1981. Utahns experienced the significantly lower rate of 3.33 for the same period. High speed and the drunk driver are our most consistent killers on the highways, said Nordfelt. With the 55 mph speed limit and the current furor over drunk driving, we seem to be developing some inroads to the highway death problem.
