Choice of Child Care Difficult for Working Mother By SHELLEY KANCITIS Review Correspondent When a woman decides to the working world, whether out of necessity or by choice, she is often faced with a difficult decision. Who will care for her children? A small percentage of women call on relatives for baby sitting help, but with a mobile population and increasing numbers of grandmothers who themselves have returned, to work, most women must go outside the famer - dren who have special problems. When deciding between a home day care provider or babysitter and a day care center, Olsen said it is primarily an , individual matter. We dont ' rounded. "It shouldnt stress one area too much such as academics," said Olsen. There should be consideration of aLL the child's needs: physical, emotional, so- cial and academic. Look at the centers physical environment. Is it attractively designed. Check to see if there is a variety of equipment, toys and recommend one over the other." Costs are similar, but day care centers do not always take infants. Sometimes people choose home day care so they dont have to split up their children when they have one who is a baby, said Olsen. If a day care center takes infants, it must have a special license. Another reason people choose day care centers is convenience. The center may be close to work or home. Some facilitcs provide ' ' books. Most importantly, observe the children at the center. Do they seem happy and involved in interesting activities or are they bored and out of sorts? Olsen said it is important to remember to evaluate ones childs needs and preferences when selecting a center. Some children require more structured programs while others respond better to a looser atmosphere. Even an excellent day care situation is not like being home with mother, said Olsen. But when almost 50 percent of mothers with young children work outside the home, many parents will continue to face the problem of finding the right child care setting for their special services such as transpor- tation to and from elemntary schools. Field trips and preschool instruction are more common in centers than in home day care settings. All day care centers must be licensed to operate. Like licensed home day care providers, they are required to meet state standards regarding safety, number of children and staff training. When selecting a day care center, Olsen said it is important to visit several facilities. I have seen some that are a chaotic mess while others have carefully planned activities, she said.
