The plant has operated in East customers The Associated Press PROVO - Theres nothing like an episode of vomiting to take the joy out of a round of golf. 1 Officials of the East Bay Golf Course put the blame on a nearby animal rendering plant. ; Weve had trouble with the smell since day one, said Kean Ridd, director of the golf course. We have had people, both men and women, coming off the course nauseous and throwing up and weve had to reimburse them for their fees and apologize for a smell that we really dont have any control over. ; Kevin Kuhni, president of the company, contended his business isnt the only one in Provos East Bay causing a bad smell. Its the nature of a heavily industrial area to emit unpleasant odors, he said. I More than 100 complaints Bay since 1937. Some residents said they can smell the plant up to two miles away. Some of those are repeat complaints from people who call me a couple of times a day, said Reta Trimble, city ombudsman. The city is trying to work with Kuhnis and Kuhnis is being very cooperative. We are doing everything we can to try to work on the smell and be a good citizen, Kevin Kuhni said. However, as early as Friday, city officials inspected the plant and found loading doors half open when no trucks were there, said Richard Sechnst, city com- munity development director. Sechnst said keeping those doors closed as much as possible would add to Kuhnis efforts to kill the 5 f Bahai A Prescription Faith for Healing The World IMivUmmiK 2 2573 smell. There is definitely a problem with the odor, Sechrist said. Theyve done some things to try and modernize their equipment but it still hasn't reduced the odor to the level we had hoped. Kuhni's came under fire again last week when residents Stan Lockhart and Dave Knccht asked the city Board of Adjustments to reverse the Planning Commissions decision to let the business expand. Lockhart argued the business should not be able to expand until it meets the agreement that requires it to keep the smell to a minimum.
