While 1 stand firmly be- hind my position of being op- posed to any property tax in- -; crease, I must accept the fact that ' both my letter and my position, ' as tkpressed in the public hear-- : ing, crossed the line of fairness ; and good taste by personally call- ing into question the motives of some members of the city coun- cil, and for that I extend a sincere dpology to Mayor Cook, the ipejnbers of the city council, their I family and friends, and to the cit-- t izens of Kaysville. iVhile I realize that an apology, ijftcr the fact, is like trying to unring the proverbial bell, to now offer a public apology would be s. as unfair as my letter and While I could offer up Some reasons and excuses for the ! 1 com-tneot- harshness in the tone of my letter and comments, such would only be viewed, and correctly, as rationalization. Let me just say that I was wrong to turn my comments into a personal attack against any members of the council. 1 know from personal experience how hard the job is, and I publicly acknowledge that every member of the council spends many hours in the service of the community, and truly has the best interests of Kaysville at heart. I acknowledge, without reservation, that I have the ability to state my positions on issues forcefully and convincingly without making any such issues personal in nature. That I did not do this is the motivation for my apology. I was wrong, and I caused hard feelings where there did not need to be any. For this I am truly sorry. Laurence A. PY Guidelines needed for city government r and If the AP reports are accurate when they quoted Sen. Hatchs reaction to President Clinton's speech as, Wasnt that pathetic? I tell you, what a jerk. If I ever hear another Democrat blame Judge Starr, I'm just going to It would seen there surely should be a better way to administer city government than for the council to constantly listen to the many strident voices who clamor for something special for them- Standard-Examine- blow, my stack. 1 always thought that Hatch was somewhat of an Ignoramus with a capital I, but this tops all of his many previous stunts. I would give anything to see the results of a massive four-yeinvestigation of Sen. Hatch's private life. Then have it all revealed to the public, and then put him under oath and question him about it all. Even probe into the most intimate details. Dare I ask, would the people of Utah like to see this done? Or would they rebel and say that this is all wrong? I believe I could accurately guess the answer. We all know President Clinton has lied or attempted to use deception over a few very private embarrassing situations, and as a result of those and primarily because he is a Democrat, the majority of Utahns seem to hate this man. Yes, I said hate. Since Clinton has been in office I have never seen so much hate by so many professed Christians in my entire ar lifetime. I believe Senators Hatch and Bennett have lied many times to the American people and I could probably fill the editorial page with a list of them, but that is OK because they are Republicans and they are one of you. I believe God forgives all people and not just those that believe that they are the chosen few. Wake up Utah! All people are Gods children. To Sen. Hatch, I blame Starr for acting as a henchman for the Republican Party. His investigation was totally out of control and reckless. If he was unable to find any criminal misconduct by the Clintons after two years of a massive investigation he should have admitted failure and stopped the witch hunt. Instead with pressure from you typical cynical Republicans he kept digging into the presidents private life. Sen. Hat eh, how many of you public officials back there in Washington D.C. would stand up to this very type of investigation and then would want the results revealed to the people worldwide? I dont want a lie from you. Sen. Hatch, on this. 1 would like for you to tell the American people the truth. Dennis MeClune Layton John C. Josephson Sandy Clinton deserves to be Impeached " A few comments on Bill Clinton's TV performance: Deceptive and disgusting. The only reason he admitted as little as he did; Gave a j.e.; He misled people, Had an inapfalse impression, propriate relationship with Monica. etc., was because he painted fiimsclf into a corner and was forced into making misleading vague, confusing statements. previously he whggcd a scolding finger and plainly stated, I did not have a sexual relationship with that woman. Miss Lewinsky. Now he says that he didnt lie in the Paula Jones deposition as he gave answers that were legally accurate with regards to Monica. The man is a pathological liar! He lied under oath, on camera, in private, in public, to his wife, to his party, to his cabinet, to his 'staff; in short, he lied to every Hatchs latest stunt tops them all body. As if that wasn't bad enough, he had his staff and surrogates lying all over in his behalf. Birds of a feather fiockelh together. Oh, and did he apologize to America for his philandering and lying? Or say he was sorry? Absolutely not. He did devote most of his speech to offering excuses and hacking at Ken Starr and blaming everybody else. It was a pathetic insult to intelligent people. No wonder Sen. Hatch called him a jerk. Clinton is a consummate pathological liar who will lie until he takes his last breath. I don't want this sorry excuse for a man with oversexed glands as president. All he does is travel, campaign, and go on vacation, anyway. Let's impeach him. Gil Montano Layton Hunting is a pitiful sport This article addresses those of July 31 and Aug. 8 in the Salt Lake Tribune newspaper. It shocked me to discover the LDS's church involvement in this endeavor. Hunting is bad enough, but trophy hunting is the bottom of the barrel. The criteria is always animal overpopulation as an excuse to kill them. Trophy hunting is barbaric, period. anti-anim- al Why would any church go along with, even encourage this type of hunting? People sadly enough are starving in Ethiopia, etc. but others aren't allowed to shoot them. Animals shouldn't be killed either. Under 5 percent of killed animals are actually eaten. Poor management is the culprit, allowing people to build high into the animals' winter range, and killing all the carni- - also delegate to government the power to tax us to cover the cost of this protection. We as individuals do not have the right to take or steal from others for our own or our friends' personal gain. We therefore cannot delegate this improper function to government, nor the power to tax us to provide for these things. If government does tax us for the benefit of special interest groups, then it has usurped rights that we as individuals do not possess and therefore cannot dele. gate to government. Tax monies should be expended for only that which benefits all the citizenry. To do otherwise would be to violate some of the citizens rights. A little thought would suggest some things that cities have done that violate the above ground rules such as museums, sports facilities, golf courses; never mind that many cities have succumbed to this disease. I do not thiqk that we want to justify our actions because of others improper ; doings. If city laws or ordinances could be adopted to cover these two basics so that all citizens knew they could not clamor for special interests, because they knew government would not provide them, I think it would be; a more peaceful community to live selves. Would it not be easier and more just to have some kind of yardstick, or bible if you please, to guide both the council and the citizens in that which is the proper function of city government? I think there are some things that most every citizen would not question that the city should not provide or do, and should be left to individuals or to private voluntary groups: our automobiles, our pocerics, our household furnishings, our amusements, etc. There are also some things which most would agree that cities ought to provide which are easier and more safely accomplished by government rather than left to each of us: police and fire protection, city roads and courts. May I suggest two yardsticks, or guidelines, which incidentally was the thinking of the "Founding Fathers." Government can only do those things which citizens individually have a lawful right to do, as bequeathed to them by their creator. We have a right to lawful and can rightfully delegate that to government to provide us police protection. We j in. self-defen- vores, thus destroying nature's balance. All of this is not the animals fault, its ours. People should be taught kindness and love for the creatures. Family outings can be fun, without staging war on the animals. Killing is desensitizing of the spirit, President Kimball said that. On the sixth day of creation the Lord said of the animals, They are good, He didnt mean they wci e good to eat, wear, walk on, to entertain us, experiment on or profit from. He appointed us to be their stewards. The New Testament says acts of cruelty will continue, but the perpetrators will be punished.
