Each year the Post Office issues thousands of stamps. Stamps will be commemorative and educational in nature. Over the next two years stamps will herald the most memorable and significant people, places, events and trends of each decade of the 20th century culminating in the year 2000 with the issuance of a sheet of 15 stamps honoring the years 1990 through 1999. With the variety in the designs of todays stamps, collectors can choose from comic strip classic stamps, commemorative, special issues, booklet, peel and stick, and first day covers. Subject matter ranges from garden flowers, to folk heroes to endangered species to prehistoric animals. Beginning a collection is easy, said Post Office officials. Start by simply saving stamps from letters packages and post cards. Ask your friends and family to save stamps from their mail. - If you know of someone who owns a business or store that gets lots of mail, you could ask them to save their stamped envelopes for you, officials said. See if your parents have any old letters, which may have stamps on the envelopes. It might be a good idea to choose a theme like cartoons, transportation, sports, science, art, history, or flowers.
