Show Lakeside 8 Saturday July 4 1998 Lakeside Review' 560th Air Force Band to perform By RUTH MALAN Standard-Examin- correspondent LAYTON - The 560th Air Force Band will be playing at the Ed Kenley Amphitheater at 403 N. Wasatch Dr. in Layton as part of the Layton Arts and Humanities Councils Concert in the Park series on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Proudly known as the 560th A if Force Band of the Evergreen State, the band is assigned to the 141 st Air Refueling Wing, Washington Air National Guard at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Wash. Currently it is under the command of Capt. Matthew Wilson. Many band members are professional musicians while others hold civilian jobs as computer technicians, ranchers, teachers and medical personnel. The band is supported by individuals with years of expenence in the field of music. They have worked with entertainers such as comedian Pete Barbutti, the legendary trumpet players Dizzy Gillespie and Doc Severinson, and composer Bob Cumow. The versatility of the 560th Band is the ability of the 35 members to act as six separate performing groups: concert, ceremonial, jazz, Dixieland, German, rockpop and a variety of other smaller ensembles. The body is canvas for art of mehndi By TANNA BARRY Standard-Examin- corespondent - Some people it a temporary OGDENcall But Merrin Larsen of Ogden knows differently. She has been practicing the art of mehndi ever since she attended her cousin's wedding in India. Mehndi is an ancient Indian tradition of body painting, which both men and women apply for weddings and other special occasions. Each design is created from the leaves of the henna plant. The leaves are crushed into a fine powder and made into a dark paste. It is then applied to the skin with an applicator or a cone. This paste stains the skin and leaves a design or picture that lasts from two and a half to four weeks. "Its really picking up. When I first came back from India not many people knew about it, said Larsen. Larsen first learned about the art of mehndi at her cousins wedding in India. It is a custom there for the bride to gather together with friends and family and apply the henna designs. "When I found out I was going over to visit, I told her that 1 wanted to have my hands and feet done, said Larsen. Her application took 2 12 hours. After that visit, Larsen decided she wanted to learn how to apply the designs also. For less elaborate work, like an ankle bracelet, Larsen said it takes about 15 minutes. A lot of Larsen's customers work at Sunsationails salon in South Ogden or are customers there. Kami Roberts, a nail technician at Sunsationails, said, "I think its (mehndi) preCty cool, especially if you just w ant something for a couple of weeks. Roberts has had a variety of designs applied to her including vine shapes around her ankle, a peace sign, and she says shes going to get a dolphin done. This Indian an is becoming increasingly popular. "Its becoming very popular in the states with people such as Madonna, Demi Moore, Sting, etc., spomng the mehndi look, said Larsen. Larsen practices this body art at Sunsationails, and even does a little bit of work out of her home. The prices range from $5 (on small children) to S200 (for an elaborate design). Depending on the amount of time and work involved in the design, the prices vary. An ankle bracelet, which Larsen says is among the most popular choices, costs SI 5. The design lasts from 2 12 to 4 12 weeks. . Most of the designs that Larsen does are from the traditional Indian styles. I dont do tattoo drawings, she said. "I do the traditional Indian styles. She describes the styles as really pretty and ornate. The designs are mostly made of little dots and circles. But she isnt limiting what people can have done. Larsen added, "People can bring in a picture and I can try to copy it. I can basically do anything, but it's not going to look like a tattoo. Tattoos come in a variety of colors with sharp, distinct lines. In a mehndi design, the lines are softer and only come in one color, which is a dark amber. The paste, however, reacts differently to different people's skin and to the different parts of the body. So it could appear to be more reddish or brownish depending on who and what area it is done on. I think it's an option for people who are scared to get a tattoo done, Larsen said. Kari Stacy, another nail technician at Sunsationails, said, "I was kind of skeptical about it at first, but I like it. Its something different for you to try. Stacy added, "If one day youre feeling like you want something and the next you want something different, then you can change it. According to Stacy and Larsen, there are a wide variety of people getting it done, ranging from children to adults, men and women. Larsen hopes to move into more salons as business picks up, and eventually she would like to teach other people. For now, Larsen is content practicing her Indian artwork at Sunsationails and at home. Old bones under streets are significant discovery the area roughly between 900 The Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY - Construction of the most modem of conveniences for Salt Lake residents has turned up what archaeologists are calling a significant prehistoric Find: the ancient bones of a Fremont Indian and other artifacts. The prehistoric bones were found beneath South Temple by a crew working on a light-ra- il line. Also discovered were bison and fish bones and the remnants of a pit house. ; This is an outstanding and significant find, says State Archaeologist Kevin T. Jones. It reminds us that the history of Utah started long before the pioneers came into this valley." The bison bones were a surprise. says project director Richard Talbot, director of the Office of Public Archaeology at Brigham Young University. The bones suggest that the Salt Lake Valley was near the southernmost extension of the bison range, says Talbot. Bison bones have not been found in other Fremont sites. The Fremont people occupied Elthe area from about mid-Boder County south to around Cedar City. They hunted and fished x A.D. and 1300 A.D. An archaeological team from BYU is wrapping up its excavaarea of tion along a 150-foSouth Temple east of the 300 West intersection. Discovery of what appears to be a series of buried pit houses suggests that a long-tersettlement covered the area northeast of the Delta Center. The band was activated at Birmingham, Ala., on July 11, 1942, and transferred to Greenville Army Air Base, S.C. In March 1944, the 3rd Air Force redesignated the band as the 560th Army Air Force Band. It provides music for military ceremonies, official protocol functions and recruiting and retention events in support of the Air Force Recruiting and Community Relations Programs. The band has performed in many states and in Canada, England, Spain, Germany, Guam, Australia, Jamaica and Alaska.
