People don't realize how far some of these people come or what they are accomplishing or how hard they have to work, said Schriever, who has been a literacy volunteer since 1990. 1 have so much admiration for these people and what theyve overcome to accomplish what they do." Schriever got involved as a literacy volunteer after retiring as a e teacher. I caught an ad in the paper asking for volunteers, attended the meeting at the library and from then on I've been involved, she said. Its very easy to sec the need. Its a worthwhile way to use my time. Volunteers work with their clients two times a week for an hour each time. They have a structured program that is followed to help those adults learning to read to progress. It's im- first-grad- Women portant to have the structure. Otherwise we might miss something thinking that weve done that, she said. We gear the program to meet individual needs. We start with the basics, then include meaningful, interesting and helpful information, she said. In addition to the reading program, those learning to read can read a weekly newspaper put out It is by New Reader. with both local and national news and the vocabulary is something they can handle well, said Schriever. The people also read something for pleasure and fun. One lady was so excited about how the words were put together. They write it so its so real, she said. Volunteering is not just help te Schriever. It takes patience. You like to do things and then have them work quickly, but it doesn't happen that way, she said. Even when theyre highly motivated, it takes time. If you become too comfortable you can be robbed of what you were created to do, she . When dealing with personal change, a decision is hard to make until it becomes painful. A little bit of pain makes us grow. The best changes come from the times we are uncomfortable, she said. Austin advised people to look very carefully at what they say to themselves. Don't use negative statements. When you say I think or I'll try,? you are using negative statements. There is something magical about how rhythm and thought go together, four, grandmother of 1 3 and of 24. My time is all spare time now. I move more slowly and work more slowly, but everyone needs to do something for somebody besides themselves. Adult literacy is an important area. A recent report from the Office of Technology Assessment suggests a correlation between a workers skills, productivity and economics performance. Having greater skill needs seems to lead to greater job satisfaction, commitment and citizenship. But teaching these adults improved basic reading skills is not an overnight success story, Schriever said. It takes time to overcome many of the early life learning challenges. "These individuals have special problems, special needs and must overcome a lot of road blocks, said admiration for Helping in a way way of life for Margaret Schriev-e- r, 81. In 1980, Austin's life made a drastic change when she woke up in a recovery room and found she had cancer. Up until that time in her life she wanted security. "After the mastectomy I watched my security pull itself loose. None of us has security based on time, she said. Never put off what you are meant to do today until tomorrow, Austin said. Life is short so you need to get on with it today. Austin wasn't able to get her doctor's attention. He wasn't answering her questions. So she got permission to leave the hospital with her husband. They went and You did this for me? he said. It made him feel important and it got his attention. Sometimes making a difference in life is small, Austin said. Figure out how to do something different. Pay attention to something that doesnt make sense. When the doctor left the room he left her chart. She looked at the chart and found that he had described her as a fascinating and intriguing impatient. The time comes when everybody needs to get somebodys attention. What would an extraordinary person do?" Austin said. Austin advised people to take the risk to blossom and encourage your children to do so. She told of the times she had to type letters on an manual typewriter. She did this for her father, who was a professor at a university. The letters were to freshmen planning to attend the university. It welcomed them and invited them to take his class. ' "You should volunteer in an area where you feel comfortable or where you can accomplish something, whether it's driving a car or whatever. Allow yourself time, Schriever said.
